What's your budget Paul? Personally, I'd go for a manual Gen 2 Cayman S with 19" wheels and PASM if you can afford it (more power and torque, better fuel economy, lower vehicle tax with the DFI engine). Virtually identical to an R in the real world in terms of performance and handling. Unfortunately I can't comment on the Gen 1 Sport Edition versus the standard S but, again, I wouldn't have thought there's a significant difference between the two cars in the performance/handling stakes and the Sport Edition will probably be more expensive. When I get around to moving on from my current 996t, I'm thinking of switching to a Cayman. I'd really like an R, but these are going up in price, and out of reach, so have been looking at the gen 1 S sports instead. I know these are small in numbers, but was wondering how close to an R are they?
Are they worth searching out instead of a standard S, as they have all the sorts of kit I like already fitted?

 
As Geoff says, you'll be in a better car in a Gen 2 S than a Gen 1 Sport. If you Google the Sport you'll find that the enhancements over the S are less than those of the R over the S, therefore pretty much superceded by a Gen 2 S. If you want the look, seek out a gen 2 with the Aerokit fitted, or have it retrofitted to a choice car.
 
Best to have a list of options you must have and those you would like to have, then go for a Gen2 S, from cars I've seen there was a bigger take up on options with the Gen2 and there were some packages of options during Gen2 such as the Comfort Pack which had some good options packaged at a beneficial price. In spite of the Gen3 being around the Gen2 prices seem to be holding up well while Gen1 seem to be not suffering too badly but then, I'm not seeking to buy and so not studying them others may differ on this.
