Cayman S - Track noise limit

I have taken a 981s Cayman to Thruxton and was asked to hold at 4k revs and was told I was 89db. On the same day there was a 997 GTS, mine was normally 101db. Thruxton run 2.7 Cayman as track school cars. Thruxton are relaxed about the static test, it is the drive by noise monitors is more important but with a standard sports or non-sports exhaust you will be fine IMO.

I have a 2007 Cayman S and am thinking of a track day later in the summer at Thruxton. The potential problem is that the noise limit is only 90dbA !! The car is totally unmodified, but even so this seems a very tight limit. Is this likely to be a problem? What sort of readings do people typically get with this car? (0.5m @3/4 max rpm). Thanks....

Rob, I'm always dubious about the results obtained by a bloke waving a sound level meter around at the back of a car. In a true free-field with no reflective surfaces, sound pressure is inversely proportional to distance, so even relatively small variations in distance from the source can mean the difference between pass and fail measurements. Just to illustrate this, doubling the distance reduces the sound pressure to a half: a 6dB change. As Ralph says, drive-by noise measurement is much more meaningful and in your standard car there shouldn't be a problem. Jeff
