Cayman S Upgrades

Hi Everyone

I'm new to the club and enjoying everything Porsche. Hoping that this is right place to get input from more experienced owners
and more knowledgable owners than me.

Having recently bought a 2006 Cayman S, which is such a great car to drive, I am now looking to upgrade and get some more oomph!!
Does anyone have some experience or advice on this?

My original idea was to have a Plenum intake, 82mm throttle body and induction kit. Following link shows the kit. 911 Design Upgrades
However, I am not sure if this will do the job on my car as the description on the link recommends to install on modified Caymans with Hi-flow cat back exhaust.
My car does not have this upgrade.

So, now not sure if I have all this wrong or that I should just go for the standard Plenum with an induction kit.

Best and thanks in advance. [:D]

Hi and welcome, Have you had a rummage through the back pages Planet 9 forum? http://www.planet-9.com/forums/ This was originally set up as a Cayman site (although it has since broadened) and there was a huge amount of discussion on there about plenums, exhausts, and various other tuning options, albeit from a USA perspective. As a purely armchair observer, I rather came to the conclusion that Porsche had pretty much got everything there was to get out of the motor, and that all of these mods produced more sound than fury. Others of course may disagree. Enjoy the car!

Hi and thanks for the kind welcome. I have not rummaged through Planet 9 but will do so. Thanks for the heads up. Re getting more out of the Cayman I have a number of friends who are al long term Porsche fans, one of which who has done a similar upgrade to his Boxster and achieved 35BHP increase and improved torque in the mid range. Quite impressive really. Best

Hi Gary, As John says, there's plenty of chatter on this subject on P-9 but I suspect that you'll have to spend a significant sum on a new plenum/throttle body/exhaust manifolds/ECU remap to achieve a marginal power increase with a normally aspirated car and you'll need to take the turbocharging route (see TPC Racing) if you want a really worthwhile performance increase (~85 wheel hp). Hi I have had my Gen 1 07 Cayman S re-mapped by Zentrum @ Calverton Nr Nottm 2 years ago. They install a system called Quantum Tuning. As in all re-maps there are claims of extra bhp. However, with this system the engine runs through the revs smoother than before installation. There is a mild increase in mpg, which is always good, but not what I look for in driving the car, or even looking at it, as it makes me want to hear the howl even more ! Here are the links to both Zentrum, and Quantum tuning: http://www.zentrum.co.uk/ http://www.quantumtuning.co.uk/ I am sure if you give Mike O'Hanlon @ Zentrum a call he will be happy to discuss your needs. PS. I had a minor service carried by Mike a few weeks ago, and asked him to check out the Quantum upgrade, which he sent back to their HQ, and it came back A1. There are obviously a plethora of other reliable tuners out there, but I would not hesitate in recommending Zentrum who are one of R8 region's recognised independent Porsche specialist. I am sure you won't be disappointed if you take the plunge ! Regards. Kev 800MAN

Hi Kev. A great many thanks for the intro; I will ring Mike and have a chat with him, and take it from there. Regards Phil

Might be worth having a read of this as well? (no affiliation btw). http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/boxster-cayman/347837-openflash-tablet-987-1-ecu-exposed.html

been there done it got about 345bhp you need to change the rear exhaust 1st the gen 1 has 2 dirty big cats in the rear and you cannot get the air out. then just fit a 996 GT3 throttle body and plenum and tie it in with a softronic remap, they sell a full kit, tried and tested on the gen 1 don't fit any thing else. http://www.softronicsoftware.com/porsche-987-cayman-race-plenum-kit/

Another option which was offered by Porsche was to have the Sport button installed and the 2nd engine map which is switchable off said button, this comes with chrono-pack equipped cars and I don't know if this is still available. I do have chrono pack on my car and can say that it gives a more sporting thottle response approximately equivalent to the Quantum as estimated between Kev ( 800 Man ) and I on a slightly spirited drive this summer. But I think Quantum will be cheaper than the Porsche option.

there is no 2nd engine map ..... sports mode makes the throttle response significantly more immediate, if you don't have it, Softronic will add it to your map free.

You can achieve the same effect by moving the seat one notch forward. Seriously - you have to make a lot of modifications to a Boxster or Cayman to achieve any noticeable improvement in bhp and even then you'd only likely notice it in lap times. See that US "race" plenum kit is $1950 and on top of that you'd still need a de-catted or reduced-cell cat exhaust to achieve anything like 35bhp.

Close to the same effect just by being heavy footed on the loud pedal but not quite the same, sport mode makes it become a little hairier by reducing the PSM setting, used it on the Grossglockner this summer great fun hanging the tail out in the hairpins as temp got down to 2 degrees on summer tyres.

295 to 345 is well worth having imo, also the dead spot in the gen 1 is nasty , also clears that up. Not that expensive imo to get 50bhp and no dead spot and nicer sound.
