Cayman Sound System

Don't upgrade the standard sound system (which I agree is useless), get a sports exhaust instead :)

I have a 2009 Cayman S sport 987.1 version which I am very happy with -all except for the sound system. This is/was a standard fit single CD radio CD24 unit which gave a tinny sound and very little bass - despite having original fit amplifier under the bonnet. I eventually gave up on head unit and replaced with a Pioneer CD/Nav/radio/phone unit. There is an improvement on sound and generally happy with the Pioneer but the bass is still fairly gutless and now looking at either changing the door speakers and or installing a sub - possibly behind/beneath driver or passenger seat. Has anyone else experienced similar and tried changes. Am not a boy racer looking for ultra loud bass, just something similar to the Bose unit I had in my old 996 4S which was miles better. Any advice (apart from getting another 4S) welcome!

By the way, bought the Zunnsport grills all round for my Cayman and absolutely delighted -they look great and practical too. Strongly recommend anyone thinking about getting these. Easy to fit too!

Thanks
Richard

I wonder if your amp is working/ connected? Who fitted the Pioneer? The amp just powers the 2 large bass speakers in your doors and needs to be told to switch on by the head unit. Try unplugging and then reconnecting the multi connector to the amp in the frunk and seeing if there is any difference to your bass sound.

You could swap the speakers and power the door subs straight from the Pioneer unit as well.

Pleased to hear that you like the grilles, I fitted mine and it's nice to know the rad's are protected, I once hit a Pheasant at 50mph and it shattered the number plate and plinth on my old 986 Boxster S, always thought I was lucky to have it miss the centre rad'!

As for the stereo I have no idea if you can just change speakers and it will probably be best to check with a specialist stereo company. Maybe someone in your own area can advise of a good company but unfortunately members won't know where you are based, as you will notice many of us put our region and approximate locality as it helps other gauge and advise if we know of specialists and other things in someone's area.

There's a bit of a recess under the driver's seat (where the telephone module is fitted) but it might be easier to do behind the seat as then it gives you a few options without ripping the car to pieces - I ran an iphone cable from the front bonnet to the rear of the centre console by tucking it up the side of the console (didn't need to actually remove it) and the wiring for my exhaust 'noisey' switch from the back of the console through the rear bulkhead grommet for the gearshift cables.

Or maybe try and source a boxster/cayman faulty bose sub, and adapt it to a analogue sub & amp?

Thanks for the advice Paul, Tony, Kevan & Colgy. The Pioneer unit was professionally fitted by Road Radio in Crawley -who I understand fit a lot of sound kit to Porsches on behalf of dealers. Will follow up on some of these ideas and let you know. Meanwhile Paul, I have the OEM sports exhaust and originally used to prefer just listening to that ! The wife thinks I 'm actually quite sad...
