Cayman Tailgate Rattles

Hi,

Picked up my new Cayman PDK yesterday and it looked stunning. My first Porsche after many years with Audi. Really happy with the choices I made and the finish on the car but after a few miles noticed a rattle from the rear somewhere [:(]!! Surprised that this could happen on a car of this quality I assumed it was something in the boot but it appears to be coming from the interior plastic trim around the Tailgate. Its now booked in for investigation.
Has anyone else noticed or cured anything like this ??

Craig

Hi Craig - sweet drive! It sounds as though you've isolated the rattle to the tailgate, otherwise I'd have suggested the passenger seatbelt buckle, when not in use mine tends to rattle against the passenger door, unless you slip it right to the top of the seat... Other than that I can't think of anything, and apart from my creaking brakes and suspension (which I guess is cos it's all so new) when I first get in to mine it's all nicely screwed together. [:)]

Thanks BB, Yes I noticed the seat belt clunk quite early and like you said just moved the slider up to the top..

Hi Craig, and welcome to the Cayman forum. Interesting to hear that you're getting what appears to be a rattle from the rear hatch area on your 981. I believe that this problem was prevalent on the earlier 987.1 Caymans and was normally cured by screwing in the two bump-stop rubbers to pull the hatch into closer contact with the seal. Also, I think that there's a flexibly mounted mass in the hatch on the 987 cars which acts as a tuned (vibration) absorber to combat a noise boom condition and can cause a rattle. Let's hope that these problems haven't been carried over on to the 981. Enjoy the new car.....it looks great. Jeff

Craig & Jeff, No problem with tail gate, or any other rattles on mine. Good colour choice, mine is white. Chris

I had a demo car out the other day. The tailgate rattled on that. The bump stops on each of the lower corners (upper corners if open!) were screwed right in and needed screwing out a little. If the tailgate is very easy to push shut from the lowered position, as this was, chances are it is not adjusted properly and will rattle.

I find my tailgate won't close easily... If passenger and driver doors are shut I need to push the hatch to close it. If either door is open then it will close on first attempt (/drop, slam). Clearly to do with the air pressure in the vehicle but a tadge frustrating at first when you think your tailgate is just badly aligned...

This was the case on my 987, needed a really hefty push with all your weight behind it. The 981 closes much easier but still doesn't drop shut, they're not meant to.[;)]

As Chris says; perfectly normal. Try opening a window a touch before closing the hatch to relieve the pressure. It's possible to reprogram the system via PIWIS on the 987 to drop the windows slightly: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=721264 Probably possible on your 981 too but you'll need to ask the PC to do it. Great colour BTW. Jeff

hmm, very interesting, very useful... Just to ensure I've understood this correctly, I would need my OPC to make this change via PIWIS...? it's not something that is user configurable? Thanks.

Unfortunately not Neil. If you can find someone local in the Club with the appropriate Durametric cable, probably that would be OK. Otherwise it's the PC or an Indy with a PIWIS system. You'd need to check that it's alright for your 981 too. Jeff
