One weekend, two hillclimbs, two wins, two new Porsche records, two Championship victories. Not a bad result then for a tired old aircooled 993RSCS? (or is that fresh 993RSCS and tired old driver?)
The Speed Championship's usual season finale took us to Longleat on Saturday and unusually backed up at Prescott on Sunday - a replacement date for the cancelled previous event of the weekend of the Worchester/Gloucester floods. For once this year we were blessed fine weather for both days, the result of which being that all drivers attacked the hills like a pack of released wild animals, all classes setting some remarkable times. The Championship was up for the taking between myself in class 1 and Jamie Martin driving his modified 924S in class 4, unfortunately for Jamie (who has been in tremendous form all year) entry numbers meant that even if he won both rounds, if I won both as well I would win the title. So, nothing like a bit of pressure then? Fortunately for me I managed to keep it all together and at the same time had great fun with the very quick Bob Mortimer trading fastest times at both events. The official outcome is that I set fastest ever Porsche up Longleat taking the course and Club records, whereas Bob set the course record at Prescott but since his car has a 2% time penalty for running slicks I take the Prescott Porsche Club record with a fractionally slower overall time. So, two wins meant that my overall points score ended just 0.1s in front of Jamie's and sealed the Championship victory for a second consecutive year.
I obviously should take the time to thank Paul Grainger and Steve Kevlin & everybody else at PCGB Motorsport for organising and managing the Chamionship again in a most difficult year (Ty-Croes double cancelled , floods etc); sponsors Classic Line Insurance, Michelin & VFS Pro-paint for paying for everything and most of all thanks to all my fellow competitors/friends who actually make weekends away from the family a worthwhile proposition.
All the best,
