CD Changer-no cd

Hi all, I get the above message on the screen of my pcm system despite there being three cds in the magazine, I have tried a system reset by pressing buttons 1,4,8 simultaneously but no joy. Maybe it differs from manufacturer to manufacturer, but there is no whiring noise when I load the magazine, compared to the Sharp 6cd changer I installed in my 924. Any help would be appreciated

I know it is silly, but have you put the CDs in the right way up? Are they original music CDs, or copies? It can be a bit touch about reading CD-Rs, and I don't think it will read CD-RWs.

If it ejects the cartridge, there must be power to the CDC, so the only other connector you could check is the fibre optic plug. It has two orange cables going to it. Other than that, I'm scratching my head.

Hi Richard, it does not sound silly as people are often in such a rush they they adopt the if all else fails bung it on the forum method of fault finding. Sadly in this case I read the instruction regarding disc orientation, and they are original music cd or bloody good copies of the label but the bright silver tint to the music side of the cd suggests originality, otherwise the surface would be greeny- blue. Yes it does eject the Cartrige, I just press the eject button so it looks like the fibre optic. Do I have to remove the part of the trim in front of the battery compartment, i.e. the peice with the two press-studs on, to check the fibre optic?

If I remember correctly, when I removed the redundant CDC on mine, I had to take the plastic panel off, but it was an easy job. I pulled the 'boot' seal off the edge of the compartment, and after undoing a few screws it lifted off.

A job for tomorrow then. Thanks Richard. Will you be at the agm or at Impney the day before? A pint might be in order.

I removed both sides of the boot liner/cover, and removed the cd player. I Checked the firbre optic plug and I seemed to be in good working order and transmitted the no cd changer signal to the head unit when I disconnected it. I did another reset and examined the cd changer. It was apparent that apart from clicking in the magazine the head was not traversing across the magazine; I ejected the magazine and operated the actuating slide that is pushed down when the mag is inserted and nothing else happened. After a few tries suddenly the the head started to index across stopping at each position (this was accompanied by the whirring noise I said I couldn't hear in previous posts so at least I was moving forward) and I was able to observe the operation of the disc selector "tweezers", for want of a better word, and they seemed to be working as you might expect them to, but they would not extract any of the cds from the mag, I checked that the disc release tab was able to engage on the release tab, and thought well I might as well clean the "tweezers" with a cotton bud wetted with some methylated spirit. I dried the surfaces with another bud and tried again; still nothing. So I went to get a torch and shone it in the narrow slot to see if the changer was making any attempt to pull the disc out. Suddenly I saw a glint of something shiny move across the opening and it seemed to have loaded the cd so I checked the head unit and was encouraged to see a load magazine message in the box, and after the magazine had loaded I was able to play a cd for the first time.; not only that it had read the presence of two more cds (all of which came with the car), which I was also able to play. So it now seems to be working properly and was just having a sulk; but seriously, it was probably because the car has spent a lot of its life not being used (04 model 24,000 miles)and the whole mechanism had just stiffened up due to lack of use and the continual operation of the mechanism finally freed it up. I now know where the brake servo lives.
