CD Changer

Could someone give me some pointers (and pics, if possible) on fitting a CD changer in the luggage compartment, please?

I know from the Workshop Manul that the Porsche preferred method involves drilling the side member but I was hoping to avoid that. Are there any alternatives? There seems very little space that doesn't hinder getting to the spacesaver.

Thanks.

My Sony CD changer was fitted to a circular wooden board that sits inside the space-saver wheel

In my 97 the Porsche branded Becker unit is bolted to the offside.

Bolt it through the front folding section of the luggauge cover (against the front panel). Lift it out of the way along with the cover when accesing the spare and other bits. When you remove it the furry nature of the trim will hide the small (m4/m5?) holes that you have made. The prefered side is to the left when looking into the compartment from the front of the car. i had a cd changer in the front but it was too difficult to get as secure a mount as i needed to stop the cd`s from jumping so i bought a tape that links to my ipod-far better solution in my view and much better quality

Agreed iPod lead is the way forward. My changer is just sat there idle but retained to maintain originality. I have a Becker GP installed with iPod lead to the glove box.

Thanks for the suggestions and ideas. Looking again at the folding section of the luggage cover there are some holes already so perhaps a previous owner had gone down that route. I also like the idea of using the well of the spacesaver, providing the unit can be held securely. Cheers.

Les, I went down the route of putting the compressor / jack, elsewhere under the luggage cover and sitting a piece of hardwood (covered in material matching the luggage cover) inside the spare wheel. The changer sits neatly on this, is out of site, and you loose no luggage space. I am away at the moment, but of you want a picture I can post one later

Hi Shane - many thanks for your reply. This method appeals to me most of the responses so far. I noted yesterday on the Audiofile website that they show a changer fitted below the 'pocket' on the luggage bay carpeting, vertically against the petrol tank, which may have some merit but think your way is probably for me. I would appreciate a photo when you get a chance. I'm currently up against not being able to remove the Alpine head unit. No keys came with the car (as ever!) and it's not clear - to me anyway - how I release the unit. As I'm near to Audiofile (in Bishop's Storford) I'm thinking of going there and asking them. They may even remove it for me. What's odd is that I can find no ads for the keys on the 'Net - except in the US on eBay. Even a 'specialist' in all things audio has directed me towards Halfords (!) or similar. Thanks again. Regards.

Les Is this an Alpine unit with a removable fascia / front panel? If so, I can probably give you the method for removing it. Nick

Hi Nick, thanks for your response and offer. I went to Audiofile in Stortford on Wedsnesday and a helpful fitter there told me what to do. Simple? You bet - and I don't mean either of us - I don't need keys, just move two small catches on the front of the unit and then pull on them with a hooked piece of metal. Came out a treat. He offered to do it for me for £5 - cheeky b*gger! Got the head unit out and found that it had a lead with a jack plug on it which, I believe, fits some sort of MP3(?) player which I don't have. Now I know how to remove it, I just need to decide whether to leave it or change it for the Sony head unit and 10-CD changer I had in my 944, per my previous posts on here. Regards.

Les Pleased you've solved that part of the problem. The jack may well be for a CD player. My unit is away being repaired at the moment but I'm fairly certain that's what it's for. Is it a 7525? I'm near Gt Dunmow, so we're almost neighbours. regards Nick

Les, I kept all my orginal fittings including the wooden board for mounting the Sony CD player in the space saver if you need to look at them. I'm just South of Bedford on the A507/A6 in Clophill. Like many others I replaced my unit with a dash combined radio/CD/MP3 unit.

Thanks for the offer John. Still to decide for sure which way to go. Currently amused by the title of the disc appearing in the display, so may leave things for a while. My main problem was removing the unit but now I know how, the pressure is off. Cheers.
