CD Changer

I have an 03 C2 and ever since buying the car (fifteen months ago) the cd changer has been very erratic in operation. On a few occasions it has worked fine but mainly it has only recognised and played the cd in no 6 position.
I haven't done myself any favours in that I tend to just enjoy driving the car and haven't returned the car to the OPC for rectification....the PSE is all the noise I require....and now the car is out of its warranty. Has anybody suffered similar erratic operation of the unit and any suggested remedies? Thanks

Jono

I have a 2003 996 cab with the six disc optional cd changer with bose, on occasion the unit will power up as normal and display the word porsche on the screen and then nothing will happen, no sound from the radio or cd system. To resolve the problem I have to turn off the engine / restart and find that this cures the problem 99% of the time. As you say it is a minor niggle and nothing that really bothers me to be honest. I mentioned at the opc at my last service and got the answer they all do that and no one really knows the reason.

It happens to me too, but usually on back-up cds that have gotten scratched. Try a CD lens cleaner and/or CD scratch remover....

Hi, I also had a similar problem a while back. OPC stated that they removed the plastic bonnet liner to find that the fibre optic cable had been "kinked" by the plastic trim. They ensured that the optical fibre was not trapped and replaced the plastic trim. I have not had the problem since.

I've always had that. I've just ejected the CD cartridge and put it back in. That seems to make it have another go, sometimes that then works.

It seems to help if the car is still or moving smoothly when the CDs change. Which is probably why the problem keeps appearing [:D]

I have the same or very similar problem, the head unit recognises that all six discs are in the changer but will only let me select 3 of them (one at a time of course). I've tried swapping CDs to no effect.

Today I received a CD Laser Lens Cleaner, loaded it into the cd changer unit and pressed play. The cleaning process takes just a few minutes. I then put the cassette back in with the original six cd's and the changer recognised/selected all six as instructed....problem has disappeared completely....and a damn sight cheaper than my OPC's suggestion ie. a new changer. Thank you Rodney for your suggested remedy.

Cool. You might notice an improvement in the sound quality as well, as the CD player's error correction system is no longer working overtime on trying to read the CDs through the dirty lens.
