CD Player [Single] Stopped Working

Hi, just wondered if anyone else had seen this problem? 2005 [55] Boxster S, 33000 miles. The single CD player has just stopped playing CDs. It seems to read the CD [shows track numbers...] but will not start to play. Have tried bought CDs and self-recorded CDRWs with same results. Have tried one of those CD lens cleaner disks - No good
Any ideas?

First port of call for all electrical or microprosessor controlled systems is to disconnect power to the unit then reconnect.
Logic circuits do get confused from time to time so a reset usually sorts these out, either pull the power supply out from the rear of the unit, or, disconnect battery for a few seconds, once reconnected all should be rectified.

If this still is not fixed then a good clean of the laser is the next job, cleaning disks dont work - laser tracks a few microns above the surface of a disk so these "cleaning" disks dont do anything at all, Dust can settle on the laser head which in turn deflects the light causing a mis read, a simple cotton swab used dry rubbed over the laser head will sort that out, however, you will need to pull the unit out and open it up to get at the laser, and if you do this then you may as well polish the laser guide rails with the swab just in case dirt has caused the laser guides to stick, you can move the laser head manually by just pushing it along the rails and cleaning the exposed part of the rails, as you reconnect power the laser head will auto reset itself into position

Easiest way is the battery disconnect, all you will need to do is reset the one shot window function, tune your channels into the radio and switch on ignition for one minute without starting or touching the throttle - for throttle adaption, You can always pull the unit out and remove the power cord from the PCM unit - though i havent done that before - as i say, disconnect of the battery is easiest

Probably two fuses as the unit has a switched live and a permanant live (to hold the memories)

Hi again, Glyn and VvrooomM
Just tried removing/replacing the fuse and nothing has changed. Does that suggest I need to give it up to the garage, or can you suggest anything else to try?
The unit is still showing the correct number of tracks on the CD, but just not starting to play them...
Cheers, Geof

Is this the single-CD slot in a PCM2.1 unit, or a CDR-24?

If it is PCM2.1, then there was a technical bulletin issued about this problem, which affected some MY2005 cars. There is a software update CD to cure the problem.

Hi Richard, thanks for your advice
I'm fairly sure the overall unit is the PCM, and it's the single CD player that is the only function that has stopped working
Forgive my ignorance, but could you point me to where/how I might gain access to the technical/software fix you referred to?
Much appreciated,
Geof

PCM is SatNav, Phone, etc. CDR-24 is the basic Radio/CD unit.

If it is PCM, then the software update is done with a special CD. Part Number: 000.043.205.46.007 @ £4.56+VAT.

You can try ordering one from a Porsche Centre. If you find they won't supply it to you as an end user, drop me an email and I will get one for you. I also have the instructions, so if you need them, drop me an email and I'll attach them to a reply.

Hi Richard,
Leeds Porsche Centre say they will order one of the CDs, but they think I will have to bring the car in for them to "key it in," whatever that means. Sounds expensive... Anyway, we'll see what comes of it
Thanks again for your help
Cheers,

I suspect that it to try and extract more money than is required, if you know what I mean. If you would like the instructions, which show how easy it is, drop me an email.

Edit: Book time for the update is 18 minutes, by the way.
