CD / Radio ???

Wonder if someone here can help....

I am wanting to install a radio / CD player in my 1990 Carrera 4. Presently the unit is radio cassette. I've taken a look around at the usual places... but all of the ones I have seen look as if they belong in something from 'Pimp My Ride'. Lots of flashing blue and red lights - I'd like something a little more subtle (i.e. a lot more subtle) - and in keeping with what the car might have had when new.

What spec do others here have in their cars? Any recommendations? Any that I should absolutely steer clear of?

I don't think I want to look at multi changer units as there is precious little space in the car anyway!

Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks for reading this far.

This is what you want gents

I paid £60 off ebay for a BN boxed unit, but have seen them go for a lot more.

There are some on there now with a blue display (VW OE I think).
I can mail the company I bought mine from to see what deals he can do. Let me know.

I think panasonic do a nice looking retro style unit as well, iirc some 911sc peeps had them.

How much do you want to spend? Becker do a decent looking (i.e. not space invaders) cd/mp3/radio but its around £350.

It's called the MONZA. It comes with different colour back lighting (green, orange, red, blue) but below is none colourful version

Colin,
There is an alternative to installing a radio / cd player which I use in all my cars.
I have am FM Transmitter. This little device which can either be powered from the cigar lighter or internal batteries, it has a standard 3.5mm jack plug that plugs into any headphone socket, so far I have used it with, mp3 player, portable cd player, laptop, and Sat Nav device. There is a choice of frequencies that you can use, all you do is tune your radio to one of the frequencies and you have FM Stereo quality. Unit is small, so can be placed in glovebox. Cost - about £8.00 from ebay. Another advantage with it, you can use it on the hi-fi, or take it and an mp3 player to a friend's house, they can listen to your music. Have a look at ebay 9715032010[:)]
Cheers,

I have fitted Blaupunkt units in my last few Porsches, and currently have this one in my 964 http://www.bluespot.co.uk/stock/dresden.asp which looks acceptable. sadly they have dropped this model, but if you look around this website you will find others http://www.bluespot.co.uk These are good folk to deal with too, swift service and no hassle.

Get an MP3 playing head unit. that way you can easily put 12 full albums on one CDr, so a seperate CD unit is redundant.

I'm with John - I've Blaupunkt Dresdens fitted to both Porsches and our Mazda MX5. They look and sound good, they're fairly cheap and they play MP3s. I've also got the FM transmitter mentioned earlier, connected to my Ipod.

Thanks for the comments so far chaps! Interesting. As the car is mostly used for 'high days and holidays', I wasn't planning on spending a chunk of money. Wanted to keep it sensible and keep cash for the priority - keeping the car running sweetly.

As for the iPod thing.... I have an iTrip - which is a little transmitter gizmo so I think I'll just stick with that for a while....

Just bought a MP3 Blaupunkt for my 911 SSE from halfords at half price for 100 quid, and it is quite plain and simple but is a decent output.

Hope this helps.
