CD unit problems

I've just had my basic CD /radio unit replaced under warranty as the original was losing it's memory at random on the sound setting - bass, treb, bal, loudness. One week later, it happens again on the new unit. Has anyone come across this problem. It would be nice to be able to help my helpful OPC out, they're stumped.

The memory of these things comes from the permenant supply to the headunit (normally a yellow wire). I would check the integrity of this wire, and also the fuse which its run through, as if its shorting or just breaking down occasionally it will loose anything thats stored in memory... There is often an inline fuse on the yellow wire, adn these are nutoriously dodgy, so might be worth checking that too, and winding some electrical tape around it incase its pulling appart and causing a momentary break in the circuit. I guess if this is the failure, it will be dropping everything in memory (radio stations, volume, cd-track, etc) not just individual functions like volume or tone; Im not 100% sure what the failure mode is from your post...

I would hope the OPC would have checked this straight away before replacing the head unit, as its a pretty obvious failure-mode, although I am unsure of the particular instalation on a boxster, so this may not be the cause of your problem! [;)]

As its an intermittent failure, it could be an absolute pain to track down... Do you have any more information? Does it happen after lots of short journeys (ie low battery power) while your driving, while the cars been standing for a while, etc?..

That's a good point Catboy, I'll pass this by the OPC next time, thanks. I don't think it's losing anything other than the sound settings but I need to double check this (I don't often listen to the radio but the stored stations seem the same as ever). It seems to be a completely random event, only happens when the car's been sitting, never happens after it has started. It might happen overnight or take a week or two. By the time they'd replaced my original unit, it had gone from happening once every couple of weeks to twice a week, it certainly seemed to get worse over time, It has only happened once since I got the unit replaced 3 weeks ago.

Had the same problem - loss of bass and treble settings againast the radio, CD (single), and CD (multiple). Also, the multiplayer stopped recognising CD's in the cassette (even if every one was original) on a random basis - reinserting the cassette did sort this for a time but even that stopped working after a while. This was with the Bose system, suggesting it's the headunit with the problem.

The OPC replaced the Head unit, which does seem to have stopped the loss of settings, but every now and then the multiplayer fails to recognise the disks [] .

Incidentially, I do remember reading somewhere that whilst the Boxster came top on the JD Power Ownership survey for roadsters, the most common complaint they got was for faulty stereo's.

I don't think I'd buy a Becker system out of choice from now on.......[;)]
