Centally mounted heater controls??

Having just bought a 911sc I must say I am perplexed by the heater system in the centre behind the hand brake. It has the dial fitted however its not connected to anything, when I removed the unit it is full of circuit boards with connectors, none of which were connected although all the connectors are present both in the floor and the unit, its as if the dial is just for show, there is no sign of there ever having been anything for it to ever connect to. Am I right in thinking on this model and year (1983) that the manual system was left fitted but also an electronic system was fitted, the two levers with the red ends are also there and appear to work, can someone tell me whats going on!!!!

Nick, you really need to buy a Bentley SC manual!

My car has the (much nicer) manual controls so will defer on this question [8D]

Nick if you have two levers there it seems you have the earlier system (purely manual). This has been retrofitted as your model from the factory should have the 'Automatic - Heating System'....faint chuckle...Someone has replaced the auto-heat paraphanalia with the early system, I would say forget auto heat put the car on a lift or jack stands and observe if the curiously named heater flapper valves open and shut. On a poorly maintained or little used car these may have seized open or shut. The system works well when it is properly understood and maintained. If you aren't concerned about keeping the car standard you can remove the engine mounted heater/blower motor as that is activated by the auto-heat system, if the wires are not connected in the box it won't function.

Nick,
Give me a call some time I have some parts for the auto system you can have if you want to return it to the original system. The main part should be a link rod to the levers and then to the flapper boxes under the car. If you remove the left side of the box you should be able to see this rod. The first circuit board in the control (the one with the knob) is the blower and thermosat control. The second part is a motor to move the flapper boxes to allow hot air to flow into the car. The various connectors are one to the temp sensor in the car and the other is a temp sensor on the right hand flapper box, the others control the motor and blower fan in the engine bay. Bones and John are right you can revert to the older system and tidy the engine bay up a bit by removing the blower that is in there. If you want the bently pages let me know

I fixed my auto system earlier this year, having taken it apart and sorted elec connections. If you'd like to talk through with me email me and I'll give you tel contact details

I got my sc about three months ago and the auto-heater works fine but I have only just mastered setting it so that I don't have to drive everywhere with the windows open to cool down :ROFLMAO:

I'm new to this Porsche malarkey and was wondering if the Bentley manual is the best guide for doing any repairs on the car? If so, where am I best to order it from. Ideally I am after a full workshop-spec manual that will cover everything from basic service specs to full stripdowns.

Cheers

Steve

BTW, are there any groups local to me in Stafford?

FWIW, late SCs were fitted with auto-heating but retained the 2 red leavers (incase anything went wrong I assume). I doubt it was retrofitted to your car.

It shouldn't get uncomfortably hot if the heater flapper valves are closing properly, have a look under the car whilst someone operates the heater control. Auto heat was first introduced as an option in 1976 on the 911 2.7 and the Carrra 3.0. It was fitted as standard to most SC from '78 onwards, any car having the previous two lever manual system after this has bought a car with the earlier system ordered from new or bought a car with the system retrofitted which I've seen done on more than a few occasions as it's simple and effective. I haven't seen auto heat and two red levers on an SC yet though, just auto heat and a single lever that can be unscrewed from the auto heat system to function manually if the electrics fail

My '79 SC has both the auto heat and 2 red levers fitted.
Can't say that either has the slightest impact on heating the car. I suspect that as Bones has mentioned, the valve flapper thingies are not doing what was intended and will need some tlc.
