Central Locking Kaput

The central locking has broken on my '99 996. When I try and lock the car, either from the fob or by putting the key in the driver's door the alarm beeps once and the doors wont lock. All the interior lights remain on, which makes me think the system thinks one of the doors is still open. The passenger door isn't locking at all and I can see no way of locking it. I've just removed both door's kerb lights to avoid disconnecting the battery now it's home and on the drive.

Any ideas? Where is the door open/closed sensor/switch?

For the time being, you can use the emergency locking routine. Turn the key in the door to the lock position and back 3 times in quick succession.

It sounds like one of the microswitches within the door lock assembly is stuck or broken. It is a fairly common fault. You can't buy the lock switches by themselves, and have to replace the complete lock assembly, at a cost of about £100. Of course, it is difficult to tell which side is causing the problem without doing a diagnostic check.....

Brilliant tip re the emergency locking routine, tks. I'll try and find the micro-switch in each door and test them.

You'll have to take off the trim panels to remove the door lock assemblies. Once you get them out, you can take them to pieces, and you may find the broken switch. I have heard of people replacing them with a similar item from Maplins.
