Central Warning Light (!)

Scarlet

New member
Hi all,

1990 964 Carrera 2 Cabriolet

On turning on ignition today all warning lights came on as usual on starting engine all warning lights went out EXCEPT the Central Warning Light (!).
Central warning Light could be switched off with cancel button on central console and stayed off. Car seemed to run fine as usual.
Brake lights working with headlights on and off, handbrake working too.
Any suggestions or helpful hints gratefully received.

Many thanks
Richard

When the central warning light comes it usually pairs with a warning light to indicate the actual problem, so you may have a bulb gone in one of your warning clusters as I have not heard of it coming on on its own.

When you turn on the ignition there will be a instrument light cluster test. If you see that one of the warning lights does not come on during the test, this might give you your answer.

All the warning lights come on at test but none stay on other than the Central Warning light after start up, so no pairing of lights.
Also once central warning light is cancelled (with button on centre console) it stays off, but will come on when handbrake put on or seat belt undone (as it should) and then it when handbrake released or seatbelt fastened the warning lights go out and so does the central warning light.
Spoiler works, fuel OK. Oil pressure fine, roof working, fan belt ok - only other thing could be air bags?

The only problem recently was a flat battery noticed a week ago - I forgot to attach the trickle charger as the car is used only occasionally and on fine weather days!

You say all warning lights go off? Check the rear wing is operating ok as the warning light for this should come on initially and stay on until after you move off and gain a little momentum.

I meant to say all warning lights go out as they should i.e parking brake light when parking brake released, seat belt light out when seat belt fastened, rear wing light goes out after moving off and over 5 mph etc.
