Centre console = money box

The ashtray in my car used to open quickly/sharply rather than smoothly as the damper mechanism that controls it had a broken clip that allowed the cog to move away from the teeth on the ashtray lid. I decided to take it apart today to re secure the damper mechanism. On removing the insert with the ashtray and electric windows switches i noticed some money inside the console.

Using a set of mechanical fingers I retrieved £25.91 from inside the console, I'm sure i'd find more if i removed the console. I guess a previous owner used to keep money in the ashtray and it found its way through a gap in the lid when closed into this area, worth a look in your cars.....

I though I did well with mine when I bought it. £15.50 in change from exactly the same area as you. I found it when fitting my garage door opener.

I'm actually crying with laughter at these two posts - perhaps I am getting tired :)

What's even more funny is I wonder how many people rush off to check under their ash trays now!

funnily enough my ash tray is how you describe i always wondered if that how it should open. is the damper bit easy to replace?

I didn't replace the damper as i couldn't see a part number for it in the parts catalogue, I glued it back into place with a little superglue.

I invested my £25.91 today:
