Certificate of Authentication

Hi There,

I just bought my Porsche 1970 911 Tagra and wanted to get a bit of information on it which I know you can get through Certificate of Authentication, but is there any web site where I can input the Vin number and get the basic information about the car i.e. paint colour and spec etc. Before I make any significant restoration I want to get all my ducks in a row first.

Thanks in advance for any information.

Best,

Mark

You can only get this info from Porsche, at a cost (unless you are a PCGB member), but they are notoriously unreliable. I would say that they are not worth the paper they are printed on; you can ask for errors can be corrected, meaning it is possible to alter the original build spec to suit what you have. Is the car a UK supplied RHD? If so, the register secretary may be able to help out with information from a different, and more reliable, source.

If you contact Ian Mc leod he may be able to help you If you are a pcgb member you used to be able to get the coa free I don't know if it's still the same' the paint code is on the plate on the left hand A post if you quote the vin no we can tell you the year and model. Berny.

Thanks for the quick response gents..

No I bought the car from the US its a LHD, would that mean I have to do the COA through a US dealer? At present I'm not a member but maybe that will have to change. :)

Best,

Mark

As it's a US car you will have to go via Porsche Reading to the factory, it will not be in the UK records. Did you get any historic documentation with the car? That would be more reliable that a CoA.

Unfortunately the car is on a ship at the moment, the previous owner was in his late 70's and not too good with scanning documents etc. So I just told him to put any documents etc into the car and I would see what I get on this end!!

Fingers Crossed.

Ha Yeah.. I'm Naive but not that Naive.. I have all the important documents as you need them for shipping but its more the personal receipts and old photos of the car when he bought it 10 years back.. I'm going to try my best to bring it back to its former glory as its current state is non original. Snap attached

I do not share Nick's view on the accuracy of a COA. I understand that people do have COA's which have "issues". However, I have obtained Certificates of Authenticity in recent years for three different cars manufactured in 1970 ( for USA market), 1972 (South Africa) and 1996 (UK). All three were applied for through Porsche GB and appear to be correct.

There is a thread over on DDK, where most early Porsche owners hang out, detailing some of the errors in these CoAs and how easy they are to get changed. The only sure way to confirm the build is with the kardex, which is not used in the production of CoAs
