Worth doing...and you might be surprised. My car (first registered Jan 1992) turned out to have a build date in 1990!!

I recall this was about the time of a stock market crash. The 944 was an expensive car...my S2 with its extras would have had a list price not far short of £40k...

This came up on one of the Facebook groups last week, with a 1992 car being 18 months between build and registration. Sales had fallen off a cliff face due to the recession, but I'd alway imagined they'd keep producing and sell cheaper, so the factory was kept going. Porsche don't do that, so it's a miracle they sold any 944s when the 80% new 968 was about to be supersceding them. I wonder if, in fact, they slowed production right down? Were any of the last cars actually built in 1991 or 1992? They would have been gearing up for the 968, and moving production tools/staff from Neckersulm to Zuffenhausen for 1992's 968 launch, so it makes sense that the last 944s could have all been left over stock.

Good point, Paul. It hadn't occurred to me that they might have just built cars for stock to tide them over whilst production was being moved. Wonder what the last actual build date for a 944 was? In my paperwork I don't have the original sales invoice...would be interesting to know if they were discounting at that time (to shift stock), or were selling at near list to keep cash flow up (supported by a limited supply) during the change.

How things have changed! Visited BMW Mini at Oxford yesterday...a real eye opener. Every car is built to order and they don't build for stock at all....could explain why it's hard to get a discount! Well worth taking the tour. Quality control there is awesome.
