I know that as ive put that in the post but the rubber sealant I find is better as ive used it on loads of cars in the past with no probs just put sealant on new water pump so sealant well go on old gasket fits in place like a glove.

I've read and re-read the original post in this thread but I still don't have the slightest clue what it is supposed to say. My head hurts....

Likewise!!!!

I know I was pointed in the direction of the forum rules for mentioning bad punctuation and will likely get another "finger waving" now,
but surely some effort must be made as I and many other can't work out what is written.

People would take these posts more seriously and with greater interest if they were understandable.
I've said what needed to be said and will say no more about it !!!

While I'm no fan of tube based sealants, at the very least you should clean off the old gasket to ensure two, super clean, uncontaminated, flat mating surfaces.

Gaskets are a great deal more than a bit of cardboard filling a gap to stop what ever is inside escaping. They ensure the design spacing of components, correct torque values for fixings, a design interface between two dissimilar materials ensuring appropriate movement for expansion and contraction; the list goes on.

A bit of silicone goo will not do the same job and silicon goo over the remnants of an old gasket is a downright bodge as you aren't getting even contact pressure or alignment.

You can not clean off the old gasket as its metal & tube based sealant they have come a long way now from home made card board cut out gaskets there say sealant just as good even better Remember still got old metal gasket on there look ok.

Exhaust manifold gaskets are metal, head gaskets are metal, you still remove them, clean the mating surfaces, and use a new gasket during reassembly. As noted before, gaskets are designed to give a very specific space between components. You can't achieve that with goo.

I have to ask, have you taken your water pump off previously?

no since I put new one on I had no probs with old gasket sealant I have seen them rust in the pass so got be metal
