change of battery in boxster

I need to change my batteryin the Boxster.It is a2003 2.7.When disconnecting it the alarm goes off and only stops when reconnected.Porsche suggested leaving the key in the ignition[position 3 but there only seems to be 2 positions].I tried this but the alarm still came on.I then took out relevant fuses but to no avail.I was then advised to simply change the battery over as quickly as possible and just put up wit
h the noise.Anyone out there with any advice? Finally where would I find the radio code? I t is not in the handbook.Will the Porsche main agent supply it over the phone by me supplying the chassis number?

Switch the ignition on, but don't start the car. Leave the key in that position, and then remove the battery.

Edit: If you have a CR-23, it doesn't have a radio code. If it is a CR-22 etc, the radio code should be on a card, usually kept (incorrectly) with the driver's handbook. If you have lost the code, drop me an email with the last 4 digits of the serial number, and I'll try it on my decoder.

I have just bought a new battery. I put the key in the ignition and this time the alarm
didn't go off. I put the new battery in and everything lights up. However there is no response at all from the engine, it won't turn over. Do you think it could be a problem with the immobilizer? I tried the spare key, but nothing! I also have an icon and failure indicator message on the computer that the handbook suggests could be coolant temperature gauge, tachometer, or cruise control etc etc. However I can't see how any of these things would mean that the engine won't turn over. ANY IDEAS ANYONE.

It does sound like an immobiliser issue. If you lock the car with the remote, do you get any beeps from the alarm horn? Any dampness under the passenger seat?
 
It may be worth checking the fuses - particularly fuses C1-C10 (engine electronics, fuel pump etc).

Edit: thinking about it, from the error messages you are getting, there may be no power supply to the DME (ECU), as these signals are all transmitted to the instrument cluster from the DME. The fuses would be a good place to start, as one may have blown if you reconnected the battery with the ignition on.
 
Problem solved.Somehow I had missplaced a fuse in row b.Put the spare in the hole and engine started ok.

Sorry to resurect an old thread, but i need to replace the battery in my 2004 986. Is it straight-forward to change ? The OPC is quoting me £240 (parts + "labour")....

Any thoughts appreicated!
 
Thanks Mark - was a bit worried i was missing something obvious as the OPC wanted to charge me 1 hour labour to change the battery!

I got the Bosch Silver 7HN (75AH) for my 996. They are about £75 from Euro Car Parts or Costco.

Thanks Richard - my car came with option 197 ("Higher Amperage battery"). Is the one you've mentioned above the right one ?

Mine had M197 too, but I think all UK cars did. I seem to recall that the original Moll battery was 80AH, but I'm not sure. The Bosch one was recommended to me by a specialist, and has been perfectly fine so far. The rating was printed on the top of the battery, so if you want to be 100% certain you could check there.
