Change the belt or not? (Ring stuff too)

Are you going to the 'ring on a busines trip to sign a vital contract or for the adventure? Get European breakdown cover & just do it. That's what I did in March 2007, my toolkit consisted of a DME relay & a mobile phone [;)]

Off to the 'ring this weekend, have done the brakes, some bushes, changed the oil etc.
I changed the Belts/tensioner 2 years and 8k ago.
I'm tempted to do the timing belt as my engine isn't the most  oil leak free in the world, but then part of me thinks its best not to tinker too much just before such a long trip in case I disturb/damage/forget something vital.
Just inspect the belts/tensioners and leave it?
Or change them as they may have been eaten by the oil?
Or just stop being so paranoid.

Ive had a lot of oil leaks on the front of my engine and its never touced the belts. It can get inside the belt covers but it doesnt seem to make its way onto the belts. You could check the belts condition without taking them off.

I agree with Tom, if you are worried about oil contamination then take the covers off and have a quick look just in case. 2 years and 8k miles since the last change is no reason to worry it won't make the Ring and back Have fun, I'm jealous. MarkK might be along soon to crow as well [:D]

Also jealous. Make sure you take lots of pics. Videos would be good too. Oh and I would love to know what it costs you in total!

Video's (in car) are not allowed, but I do have a bullet cam and recording device which may possibly become a parking sensor that's on all the time.

Be careful with the camera - a pal is a regular at the Ring and if caught with a camera you are removed from the circuit for the day and may forfeit any laps you've purchased. It can be done though - just be aware of the consequences if caught (perhaps try at the end of the day [;)])

I'm going to the ring too this weekend[:)]I am in my red turbo, will keep an eye out for you!,am booked in at Spa on monday aswell [8D](if its open[8|])so some miles will be going on over the next few days....!

Me too, very steady at the ring tricky old place, don't want to come off[&:]Its an adventure though!

Have fun - try & get some passenger laps with a regular - it'll be an eye opener! Don't forget to have steak on a stone [:D]

Going with "Dino" from the Nurburgring experience,he is pretty handy, had a couple of laps with him last time...i am just happy plodding around! My favourite thing in germany is Shnitzels, washed down with a big frothy beer (bitteburger?)[:D].Would love to go with a bunch of 944s one time.....[8|]?

You lucky @@@@!! I wish I was going to the ring in the old girl. Seems like over the past few weeks all i've been getting off people is "How's the Porsche running?" and I keep on having to recite the whole sorry tale over and over again!! Anway, my wife keeps on telling me i've made the right decision. And she's never wrong. Even when she is. Anyway, back to belts - don't change them unless they are contaminated with oil as others have said. Don't forget (despite what others may say) you really must check tension and retention if necessary after 1000 miles (or KM, can't remember), so you probably wont get that mileage under your belt before your ring trip so are increasing the risks.

Link is my car (with its previous owner sadly) going round the 'Ring. Think its been posted before but some folk may not have seen it, some fine driving there. [8D] http://www.northloop.co.uk/videos_turbo_836btg.htm Few other 944 track vids on the site too.

Well being as I forgot to order a cambelt with my latest batch of bits from Bert, I decided not to even look at the belts as it would only worry me. Checked the car over and had some new boots put on the front as the side walls were cracking, wedged some card in the squeeky bit of the dash and I'm good to go.

Packed in cause its raining properly now, managed 8 laps in a slow but steady fashion,i am so fond of my car its like an old freind, but thats prob the Bitburger talking[:D]!
