Changed My Turbo Thermostat Today

Well I have had this little thermostat sat in my drawer for a year now. Didn't change it last year as I didn't have the plastic housing and didn't want to run the risk of it not going back on properly again. Finally I got round to getting a new housing from OPC Cambridge for around £3.50 (cheapest by far). So I set about changing it and must admit it was a lot fiddlier than I expected but all doable. Was a good excuse to get a fresh glug of antifreeze ready for winter as well. As it happens it was wise because they old one was permanently open.

After the usual bouts of bleeding I was done and had a cuppa and admired my handy work allowing the car to also cool down. On the journey home from the workshop the temperature rose really quicky and continued rising, which at first caused me a little alarm. Anyway it settled above the horizontal and wandered between there and just below the second line and seemed happy as a sand boy. It normally sits just between the first line and the horizontal and has been taking it's time alittle lately.

So two things spring to mind. Is this the first time my car has ever run at the correct temperature since I have owned it? If so I am amazed that the turbo thermostat as teeny weeny as it is could make such a difference to the running temperature. Has anyone else ever shared the same experience?

When I had both stats done the temp jumped from the first line to pretty well horizontal. Fans kicked in just shy of the 2nd line.
2 years down the line and the normal level has dropped to half way between the first line and horizontal. So looks like they'll need doing again in 2 or 3 years.
As long as it runs happily and doesn't keep rising I'd say you're fine.

I imagine horizontal is correct as its about 90 degrees and psychologically it "looks" about right. Above horizontal I feel you'd always think it was too high - all the cars we have had N is either bang on half way or just under.
 
Must admit I was a little distracted on the drive home as my eye was constantly on the temperature gauge [:D] Good job I kept to the speed limit. Did hit a little queue of traffic just as I pulled off the A1 and the gauge creapt towards the third line then bang shot down as the fans kicked in so all looks good in that department.
 
Ive only skimmed your post, but what youve described is normal/correct. Most 944s are running far too cool.....
 
Mine only has 2 marks on it and spends most of it's time just below the first one, it will rise up just above it in a traffic jam (or with slightly spirited driving) but will drop straight back down when normal driving resumes, it takes ages to warm up too. I presume that one of my Thermostats is just stuck open?
 
Just to add to this, my temp gauge used to just about make it to the first mark but since changing the thermostat it now sits just below the second mark and warms up a hell of a lot faster. It may seem a bit on the warm side, however the upside is that I certainly get hot air out of the heating system, which is very useful on these frosty morning. [:D]

Excuse my ignorance, I didn't realise that they had two 'stats, where are they situated?
As Fatty said - this is news to me as well.

I presume the second one is to do with circulating coolant to the turbo, or similar? I'm pretty sure my S2 only has one.

Turbos have 2, all others have 1. It is located in the small right angle take off that bolts to the front of the water pump casting. Also make sure it is in the right way as the thermostat sticks out into the plastic part rather than into the water pump casting. As Simon says, too many 944s running about without working stats in them. You will be damaging your engine with bore wash due to overfueling at this time of the year, get them changed boys!

Mine's has a brand new 83 degree one from Porsche and a new little one too.

My car heats up really fast and then settles just above the first mark (first mark is 80 degrees) under normal driving. It wll rise to halfway (90 degrees) in traffic then the fans will cut in taking it back down to just above the first mark.

When we say "heats up really fast" how long do we mean? Mine takes about 4 miles of driving to heat up, which I had assumed was normal.
 
Mine too, and my heater seems to work well enough as well, but the temperature settles just above the first white line on the gauge. Mine has a recent "main" thermostat, when the water pump and belts were changed in the spring, but I think it only had one thermostat listed on the invoice. I'll have a look at the paperwork tonight to make sure.
 
this subject has been covered before but I sdon't think the issue has been completly resolved yet. There are at least 3x different thermostats temperature ratings for use in different climates. naturally using a car in Scandinavia will require a diffent thermostat than running the same car in Egypt !

Auto suppliers stock whatever they can buy at the right price. They may not be suitable for the UK climate. You need to check the original equipment specification and check you have the correct thermostat.

The ECU programming together with various sensors etc control the fuel delivery, ignition advance and retard etc to allow the engine to run at the most economical and efficient temperature. The original thermostat rtemperature rating seems to maintain the engine temperature at about the first line on the guage which is I believe 80 degrees ?


 
As an aside to the thread but I couldn't help myself I also changed a turbo today. Was thinking of ways I could squeeze it into the 944 [:)]

I can dream can't I or are you going to take that away from me too!! Shame I was bolting on to a bloody diesel!!!
