Changing a front wheel bearing @ home . . .

My NS front wheel bearing is knackered - the bearings are cheap and it was a doddle to whip the bearing out and check it, the bearing was full of scrapnel so I cleaned it all out and for the short term repacked it / refitted it . . .

My question is this - has anyone changed a front wheel bearing @ home with out a press?

If so was it a drama? (I have done other cars Escorts and stuff) Also the the Haynes suggested that you should be able to move the washer behind the nut upa dn down - this how ever leave a small amount of play / rocking on the wheel hub - is this correct?

I've not replaced one, but I have adjusted them. The manual is actually right on this one. you should be as tight as you can get the adjuster and *just* be able to move the washer.

I have however replaced many a bearing. If you can get the old one out, that's the hard job done! Clean out the hub so it's spotless, and hammer in a new bearing taking care not to damage the surfaces. Be VERY careful, and take your time. And always hit it 3-9-6-12 to get it in square. of course, if you can use a vice or similar, that's even better......
 
I've changed many wheel bearings successfully (not on the 944 though). Getting them out is never the hard bit IMHO ~ I have a suitable "cradle" piece, a 4lb hammer and a suitable drift. No problem.

Tried to hammer one in once ~ caused the inner race to pop out and I couldn't get it back in.

All the others have gone in on a vice. Always a bit of a fiddle as bits of the hub casting invariably get in the way. And I have broken a vice doing it (my dad's one [:mad:] )

I'd bash the old one out, see how the hub fits in your vice. If it's remotely iffy I'd take a run to the nearest garage who should be able to press the new one into the hub in about 5 mins.
 
I have adjusted the wheel bearing as suggested and with the wheel on you can feel a small amount of play, is this correct does anyone know?
 
there's always a "small amount". define small! I don't recall mine, but i'm sure someone will be able to.....
 
Could you bung the bearing in the oven for quater of an hour to avoid having to go at it with a hammer?

If I remember, won't heat make it expand!? Try the freezer instead! [;)]
 
Yep that might work better! Now i'm showing my inexperience in 944 wheelbearings - I thought you were trying to get the bearing on the spindle. at least i'll know if I ever need to replace the bearings in future.
 
Hey all,

I also repacked my front wheel bearings recently and could JUST move the thrust washer with a screwdriver. I get maybe a 1mm of play rocking the wheel at 12 o'clock. Any tighter and it felt like the bearing was dragging.

Anyway my bearings looked fine and theres no droning sound when spinning the wheel so I assumed all was ok. But I had already found a home diy guide on Clarks Garage http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/susp-08.htm. This suggests heating the HUB assemblies in the oven so they expand and putting the bearing in the freezer so hopefully you should be able to drop it into the hub.

Haven't tried it myself but I'm sure if you do a search on rennlist somebody will have done.
