Changing from 3.2 Carrera to Cayman

The time has come after 7 good but expensive years to change from my 1988 3.2 Carrera to a more manageable and hopefully cheaper to run Cayman.
Thoughts please on what to get for up to £25k budget, not keen on pdk box.
Liking the look of gen 2 style.

I did a similar exercise about 2 years ago. I moved from a high mileage 993 to a low mileage Cayman S. I spent a lot of time underneath repairing and spent considerable sums of money on the 993.

I had initial problems with the Cayman including a new catalyst and aircon repairs most of which were covered by the warranty. It's been good since and very enjoyable.

So I would recommend you get any Cayman checked carefully and a good warranty. If you trust your own judgement I would at the very least get the codes read independently and be sure it has had regular services with documentary proof - preferably annual oil and filter changes.

They are are lovely to drive - you surely won't regret it if you choose carefully.

I've run a manual Gen2 Cayman S for seven and a half years - it's a great, practical modern Porsche and I'm sure that you'll be very pleased with it.

Your £25k budget should get you a well-spec'd CS, although prices seem to have firmed-up with the introduction of the 4-pot turbo 718. Although I wouldn't discount the 2.9L, I'd recommend that you get the bigger engine; the 3.4L DFI engine is both powerful and torquey and is reasonably economical to boot. Also the S versions tend to have more useful options fitted than their lesser siblings.

Unless you're purchasing from a Porsche Centre or recognised Porsche Indy, I think that it's worth getting a PPI. As always, buy on condition and full service history and try to drive a few cars if possible.

As a passionate Carrera 3.2 owner and fan, I might be expected to say 'you must be mad...', but I'm not that much of a 'flat-earther'.

The one affordable, modern Porsche I've driven (and I've driven many) that had me tempted to part with my Carrera was the Cayman S I borrowed from Porsche Bournemouth for the club stand at the Festival of Speed in 2015. Needless to say, I soon shook off any thoughts of selling the 3.2, but for a while...

 
As usual, Jeff has hit it on the button and so I'll just add that if you can find a well spec'd 987.2S at an OPC then it will come with a two year warranty and be well checked out service record up to date etc.

Bit twitchy about the 3.4 engine , good old forum scares about bore scoring, but if if have the bores checked out, them hopefully no props.

If OPC purchase with 2 year warranty then this should be covered ?!

911 goes to classic car dealer tomorrow, heavy heart, but will have to wait a bit before Cayman time.

Don't confuse reports of engine bore scoring on the Gen1 vehicles with the completely revised engines in the Gen2 cars. As far as I'm aware it's not an issue with the 987 Gen2 cars or for the 981-series cars which use the same engine.

I doubt that you'll find any Gen1 cars for sale at the PCs these days, and even Gen2 cars could be a rarity, but engine failure would be covered by the extended warranty.

Although bore scoring/IMS bearing/RMS issues on the Gen1 cars are somewhat overplayed and exaggerated by the internet, they're not unknown and can be very expensive to rectify.

With your £25k budget you should be able to get a decent Gen2 Cayman.

From what I see on the market £25K for a good spec gen 2 Cayman S is a tough ask. Unlikely to find them at an OPC for less than £30K and not many of them. So for £25K I'd be looking for a 2.9. But don't worry...it'll still be quicker than a 3.2 Carrera [;)]
