Changing front struts on C4 -Problems

Hi,

I am currently changing the front struts on my c4 due to one of them leaking. I have now got the r/h side apart.

The top mounts appear to be split very bad (almost all the way around).

Porsche have quoted £150 + vat per side (pn 996 343 015 04) is there a cheaper source or cheaper alternative?

Also I can not get the old aluminuim spring mount off the old strut and am worried I will crack it by hitting it. I have tried heating it and soaking with penetrating oil and no luck yet?

Any advice welcome. This is turning into a expensive project!

The strut top mounts are prone to the rubber splitting. I've just had two new ones on mine. I doubt if there is much of an alternative to the Porsche proce I'm afraid. Edit: List price is £151.76 INC vat.

The manual doesn't show any special procedure for removing the spring platform, just to loosen the bolt, but it would be best to take the bolt out completely, These things get dreadfully corroded under there, so I think you have to be patient and brave. If you want the pages from the manual, drop me an email.

Sorry I can't suggest anything positive....

Richard, thanks.

Well I was brave with the spring mount and cracked it. Its difficult to find some where safe to hit. I tried heating it for a while with a blow torch too but no luck. Strangely the l/h side came apart no problem with little corrosion.

Will have to wait for the new bits to arrive now.

Should drive a little better I hope though when finished with new shocks all round and new front top mounts.
