Changing the expansion tank?

Well with the assistance of the pointers given on my previous related post I've finally diagnosed that I have got a cracked expansion tank. My gut reaction is that replacing it seems like it shouldn't be beyond the wit of an enthusiast willing to get his hands dirty and hit his head numerous times on the boot trying to get into the engine bay!!

Has anyone got any experience of having done this job themselves?

And any recommendations on where to by one?

Wondering if it safe to by a secondhand one (given that this is quite a common occurance)?

I can't imagine that Porsche would replace it - although given the regularity of this item failing there is almost a fit for purpose issue here. That said my car is on a '00 plate.

You would be crazy to consider using a second hand one. Get a proper Porsche one - it will have a parts warranty (2 years, I think). You could get it from Reading OPC, or why not get Tony Wright to get you one. He can supply parts as well as do the job.

I think it is a bit of a pig of a job. The spring clips they use on the hoses are a nightmare, and there are several Technical Service Bulletins about these. Also bleeding the cooling system is a four page instruction in the workshop manual. Quite complex.

Well I've already got in booked in for a service on 6/6/05 with Tony Wright (based on your comments about his services in a previous thread and the fact that he is only 5 miles away from me - thanks by the way) and he is also going to get it up on a ramp - when he has one free! - to check out an oil leak hopefully before then.

I was, albeit somewhat naively, just hoping that this was something I could do myself and save some some of my hard earnt spondoolies!! Apparently not - must say I'm pretty naffed off about this kind of issue on a car the price of a Porsche - I also run a Subaru Impreza that I have put 150k on the clock - absolutely thrashing the living daylights out of it in the process (including one great race with a C2!) and all I have had to do other than service it is replace rear shocks, one clutch change and a wheel bearing.

Well thanks for the advice it does sound like I will need to pay to get it done.

This is also a problem with the Boxster and I think we are on the 7th generation plastic tank.

As said, you do not want a used one, get the latest super duper generation tank for a 996. I also suggest you replace the blue cap for the newest style that has 01 at the end of the part number.

There are people on renntech.org who have replaced the tank themselves on a 996.

 
Thanks John.......good level of detail in there - enough to put me off attempting it I think.

I've got a good friend who is pretty mechanically minded and I'm going to see what he thinks. If he convinces me to try it I'll do a photograph step by step and post it up here. But suspect it is unlikely we'll be that ambitious.
