Changing to a MAF

Guys,

So - very interested in this. Read a good bit about it - but I dont think I actually understand what is needed?

So does it replace the AFM (Air flow meter I guess?)?

Is this all plug and play - so I can do on the drive as it were....?

Any pointers to the correct kit for my 2.7 Lux??

I think it will complement the Promax Chip (which as a side is great!)

Cheers Anthony

The SciVision that deutschnine sell is probably the best bet, it's a simple plug and play setup, it'll work perfectly well with your chip and does completely replace the stock AFM.

I have the old version and have been veryhappy with it.

Is that this:
http://www.deutschnine.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=porsche-transaxle&Product_Code=D9-944I-MAF&Category_Code=

Holy ^%^%$ over £600 - wasnt expecting that.. Mind you - I dont know what price I was expecting.

Yes its not a cheap upgrade but it does make an appreciable difference which lessens the pain somewhat. Is there any other supplier of the Sci-Vision MAF who may be cheaper than D9 ?

Out of interest how much does a new AFM set you back ?

I have a scivision MAF from my 944 turbo for sale if you're interested. I'm looking for £400.

I had one of these fitted to my S2 . Got it from Promax when they were selling them...A few moons ago...
It worked well..
Since sold it to another S2 owner that frequents these "waters" ...

..or if you fancy fiddling with maps, a Vitesse & piggyback (to trim advance & fuelling) is also an option

Agreed, but the complexity was part of the reason why I didn't mention it (it also requires quite a bit of additional wiring if I understand correctly), as well as the extra cost. Whilst it's undoubtedly a better bit of kit I'm not sure it'll be too much of an advantage for an otherwise relatively standard car.

I thought the SciVision was not a true maf and the Vitesse one was the only one on the market that was?

The Scivision is a Bosch MAF meter with an electrical convertor that generates a signal that can be read by the standard ECU, which is why it's an easy plug and play. The Vitesse requires a a piggyback arrangement to work (or stand alone ECU) but has the benefit that it exactly measures airflow from min to max whereas the standard/Scivision arrangement maxes out at a certain point meaning that you're relying on calculated and not measured flow. That's my recollection anyway, but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

My research on this subject lead me to the conclusion that for a turbo i'd have said Vitesse MAF but for an N/A car I don't think that there is a point going for a Vitesse kit. The Vitesse kit is a true MAF setup whereas the Scivision is more of a AFM to MAF conversion in that the ECU still see's an AFM signal converted from the MAF output which means you are not getting 100% of the benefits of a MAF. This is probably all academic in an N/A car where good mapping will dial out this effect - however in a turbo then the real benefits of the Vitesse MAF will be beneficial. For example with a Vitesse setup you can vary boost however you like and the system will accommodate and maintain AFR's. With the Scivision you cannot as it is mapped for a specific boost pressure and if you change boost you'll be either under or over-fuelling. Also with the Vitesse V-Flex kit you can control boost pressure and map ignition against boost pressure, which you can't with the Scivision kit.

These things are expensive and the benefits probably don't justify the expense (do any mods if we're really honest with ourselves?) if your current AFM is in fine working order and your car is running as well as it can do. However if you need a new AFM then that may be time to consider the change.
