Changing tyre width on original rims?

I'm going to need new fronts before the winter and I currently have 205/50 on 17" rims at the moment and I'm planning on matching the rears which are new Avon ZZ3's (255) for some reason the 205/50's are proving quite a few quid more than 225/45's (I've calculated the tyre wall height as a percentage of the width and theres nothing in it) so my question is would increasing the width by 20mm adversley effect the handling and would they fit the existing rim ok?

Not sure of my rim widths, I've measured when fitted from the inside to the outer rim, not the edge, and they appear to be 8" at the front and 9.5" rears.

I would appreciate your views and experiences!

225/45s is the standard size for the front when on 17" wheels with 255/40 on the back (as standard on the 968CS) . As long as your front rims are wide enough and most tyre manufacturers will specify the width required.

This websites suggests 7" to 8.5" for 225/45/17

mmm, I bought the 17" rims with these fitted, replacing the rears as the originals were worn, and now when I look at them the fronts appear quite short across the width, the front face isn't as square to the rim as the rears if you know what I mean!!

Think thats made my mind up, get em changed [:D]

Cheer chaps, on the ball as always [;)]

Mate,

What are you talking about? It's the summer! Last night I knocked back half a jug of Pimms and fired up a barbeque! You don't need to be worrying about the winter when the sun is shining like it is now - the in-dash temerature display showed just over 27 degrees on the way home from work. In those temperatures you need to be thinking about summer-compound tyres to keep you stuck to the deliciously empty roads; none of this 'winter is coming' doom and gloom .... [:D]

Winter indeed. Pah! [:)]

You don't mean to say that it really is grim up north? (It's not true. I drove 'round Scotland in October a couple of years ago and I'm sure I turned the headlights off at least twice ... [;)] )
