Chargeing light

Could somebody please help with a charging light issue.
I drove into work last week in my 77 911sc with no problems, then on starting the car to go home the charger light stayed on in the centre of the rev counter, after a mile or so the light faded out gradualy over a period of about 5 or 6 seconds only to re appear soon after and stay on this time for good, i am not that hot on electrics so could do with as much help as possible with this one, ie where the alternater is, how can you test it and are there any simpler reasons for this problem other than a major one, would appreciate any help you can give!.

Many thanks Baz

Baz,
The alternator is behind the cooling fan and both are belt driven from the crankshaft. So first things first is the drive belt connected and turning the fan?

I have looked in the workshop manual and below is the checking proceedure for the voltage regulator and alternator.

This checking proceedure assumes that the battery is fully charged.

Attach a digital volt meter to negative and positive of the battery.
make sure the volt meter is connected to clean area of terminals.
start engine and run at 1500rpm with all electrical assessories turned off.
Measure voltage at battery.
A reading much higher than 14.2 volts most likely indicates a faulty voltage regulator.
A reading below 13.5 volts means that the battery is not adequatley charged.
This may be due to :-
Faulty V belt
Faulty voltage regulator
Faulty alternator.
To determine which component is faulty
1 Check V belt
2 Keep engine running at about 1500rpm and turn on all electrical assessories.
Check voltage across battery terminals
A reading that is the same as the first most likely indicated a faulty regulator.
A reading that is lower most likely indicated a faulty alternator.

Good luck
John

Cheers guy's, I will tackle this problem over the weekend, one thing though john3101, bit nieve I know, what is the red relay for?.
