Charging Battery

My 99 2.5 has been in the garage during the recent snow, and I took it out this morning. The battery was a bit slow to fire up, so would like to charge it up - before it becomes a problem. I have a normal battery charger rather than a specific trickle charger. Is it OK to connect this up to the battery for a few hours, without disconnecting or removing it?

Also, my manual does not outline the procedure to take to avoid the alarm (powered by the secondary cell) coming on if I do have to disconnect. Is it just put the ignition key in whilst disconnecting - or does it have to turned one stop?

Thanks.

Richard,

Although probably not necessary, I'd be inclined to err on the safe side and disconnect the battery before charging.

Before disconnecting the battery I think that you need to lock the car using the remote then unlock manually with the key, quickly insert the key in the ignition and turn it to the first position (otherwise the alarm will go off).

When you've reconnected the battery, turn the ignition back off and you're back to normal again. You'll probably need to set the radio code though, so don't forget to make sure that you have it before you start..!

Perfectly fine to charge with everything connected.
About 12 hours for a 4 to 6 amp charger

If the car does have long periods not in use it would be better to use a ctek charger on the car as this monitors the battery, optomises it and will never overcharge

Thanks for responses.

On previous times that I charged up the battery I removed it. This time I left it connected and in situ, unscrewed the vent holes (I have a Porsche branded battery that is not sealed), topped up the cells with de-ionised water and connected my charger. Left it on all day, and it worked fine.

My ctek battery charger/maintainer recently gave up the ghost and as I needed a replacement urgently I bought one from Halfords £40, so far so good.

Charging takes about 3 hours, can be left on after that, I tend to disconnect after 4 hours.
