Charging Problem

Hi Guys,

I'm a long time lurker and thought it was about time to sign up, however I aleady require a bit of help if possible...

Drove the 944 to work on Friday morning, started up without complaint as usual but about half way to work after running with my lights and heather on, I noticed the Voltmeter drop to below 10. I got to work, turned everthing off other than the engine and the reading was at about 11.

The strange bit now was that about 2 hours later I had to get back in the 944 to drive to a meeting, that was fine dispite the low reading - started up fine and also got me back to the office with no problems. However come 5pm, turned the key all the dash lights came on, could hear the fuel pump but the starter wouldn't even turn. We bumped the car and drove home with the reading at aroud the 9 mark, being very careful not to use anything electrical!

I have three questions:

1- Shall I just buy an alternator or could it possibly be anything else?
2- My car is an early 1984 2.5 Lux, with no Mod Cons whatsoever. Will I need to find a specific alternator for early 944's?
3- Are aternators relatively simple to fit?

Apologies for the long post and any help is really appreciated.

Andy.

HI, It is quite easy to put a voltmeter accross an alternator and check if it is working so I wouldnt rush out and buy one before that. Generally a duff alternator will show up straight away as having either a low voltage or suprisingly a stupidly high one.

I am not a Porsche expert or even close but electronics is my thing as they say :p. I have used a really good mail order company up North who supply new but non original Alternators for any car and the man is very decent to deal with . If you do end up needing one you might want to check their price against that of a second hand or recon one.

I would get your battery drop tested first by a decent car battery supplier, your battery may also be at fault and batteries can do some weird recovering under conditions of rest.

Hi i have seen the main lead fail at the altenator on this model ,check lead has not broke from eye terminal , check also for oil leaks onto altenator , this will destroy an altenator quickly.

Also check all the earth straps all through the car plus, as has been mentioned the integrity of the main leads to both alternator and starter.

I recently saved me the cost of a new alternator by removing, cleaning and checking front to rear. Rather a very good friend did.
The cost of the bottle of very good single malt it cost me was totally insignificant when weighed against the cost of a new alternator....

It can be just the regulator or even just the brushes on the alternator- very easy fix for both undo 2 screws, replace unit (Regulator comes with brushes) do up the screws.
