'Cheap' lightweight headlamp solution

Guys, does anyone know if our pop-up headlamps have to be operated electronically to pass MOT? I remember in the GTS-kit thread that the lifting assembly weights quite a bit, but I don't have the funds or 100% love for the GTS kit so was wondering if simply deleting the assembly and using catches to hold the headlamp in the 'up' position would be legal?

So you want to leave your pop-ups 'popped up'?!

I would have said that was legal, yes.

Not sure I would want to drive round in a modern version of the Frogeye Sprite all day long though....![;)]

Not that I have anything against that lovely old car - I'd love one as a toy....[:D]

No, I would manually lift them into position and use a catch to hold them there. I can't seem to locate the thread about the assembly weight - does anyone remember it? My guess it will be on the tip of Peter's tongue!?

Can't you get "daylight only" MoTs where the car doesn't need headlights?

I can't see how there would be a problem with your plan - just take it for test with the lights up and they will take it at face value that they are just raised I'd expect. Might be simplest to just use a pin to locate them when they are raised that you could insert with the bonnet open. Probably best if it also positively locates them when down so they don't flap around over bumps. Or you could make them removable like rally-car light pods.

The only other area is the ability to flash the lights, but that wouldn't be an issue with the light set up on our cars.

Sound like a good plan, the only downer is the headlamp pods are pretty heavy themselves, so I'd guess you'd only be losing about half of the weight possible. Have you considered the DIY solution that's discussed on the 924board forum, or possibly buying the cheap 'kit' that sells on ebay?

Certainly agree with the latter point. I was thinking of perhaps a latch of some sort hidden behind the badge panel. Haven't really investigated it so far just thought I would gauge opinion. Is the pop-up assembly difficult to remove/replace?

Does anyone have a link to the 924 forum thread? Ive looked back through a whole years activity (only 11 pages...), and I havent been able to find it.

Appreciated. After seeing/hearing of the dubious quality of many available kits, I have pretty much decided to make my own 'bowls' out of aluminium and the covers out of 4mm polycarbonate offcuts.

Part two is almost brilliant: if only the author'd shown measurements on the template he'd have saved me a lot of work...

Its straightforward to remove: its an absolute bast*rd to replace though! Physically re-fitting it isnt particularly difficult, but getting it all to line up properly is a massive PITA.
