cheapest classic car insurance ?

peanut

well its that time of year again and my existing insurers have hiked my premium up £75 and taken away most of the useful cover. If you bother to read the small print its a wonder that anybody actually gets paid anything frankly.

Has anyone got a cheap insurer they can recommend ? plese don't all chip in with `you get what you pay 'for blah blah .[:D]
The car gets used 1000 miles a year on sunny weekends and its value is unlikely to be more than £3k if I'm lucky so I just want something cheap and cheerful
Tescos just quoted me £264 with lousy cover and big excesses [:(]

I've just insure mine with Adrian flux.
I was quoted £200 with a guaranteed value of 5K, up to 5000 miles per year.
That was garaged. On the drive it went another £100, breakdown cover and some over stuff - another £40. So £340 in the end.

No definitive answer, as the companies tailor their price so individually. Me, classic line have been best for years but they are also among the only ones to allow my car ungaraged.

Shop around, but with only 1k per year a limited mileage policy should be way cheaper? Also get guaranteed value. See other thread!

Got mine through classics and collectibles insurance (advertise in the magazine). Quoted £189 for car over 20 yrs old, 5000 miles per annum, garaged. Owner only driving. 944 lux 2.5 litre non turbo.Seems okay, gives cover for non speed based events on the road as well as far as I can make out.

AON for me - £340 with an agreed value figure and including 5 trackdays cover per annum. 5000 miles per year allowed.

I found Adrian Flux (Brokers) were very accomodating of my old car which was similar to yours. If your car is standard just try confused.com (other sites are available).

Forgot to mention that many classic or limited mileage policies give substantial discounts to members of PCGB and Tipec. Not a double discount if you're a member of both, though....I did ask! [&:]

Confused.com's best deal for me was £800 [:-]!!! That was with FULL no claims bonus.
Adrian Flux (and most limited mileage policies) don't give you no claims discount, but still beat 'standard' policies by a mile.

Paid £340 for my S2 garaged with Adrian Flux, but was a bit gutted though, when I got a quote at Ragley Hall it was only £300, when I phoned up after they tell me they didn't store the quotes and they are only valied on the day it was given, then they tell me they no longer deal with the firm they quoted me and the best they could do was £500!!, funny as it was only 5 days later!

Needless to say a fair bit of arguing later it came down to £340, why do they do this?? I hate being a pain on the phone but it always saves me money if i'm awkward!!

Do any classic car policies use NCB? Mine didn't. The assumption is that it's a low mileage occasional car which Peanut's is.

My old car was an unmodified show & shine type & a classic policy was ideal and by far the cheapest option. My current car is a toy & I do trackdays so I have a performance car policy now (through Peart). More than double the cost even though I have full NCB on it but they are track-day & Nurby friendly, allow unlimited mileage (I did 15,000 miles in '06 & 7,000 last year), and probably not what Peanut is looking for.

try a company called lancaster there great mine was 145 fully comp 100 access and the guy i bought my car from had exactly the same policy

got a linky ?
well I just got a online quote from Lancaster and it was £320 not cheap really ?

I'm with RH at the moment but their renewal quote was £196 but their policy is extremly confusing. You need to read a 36 page standard policy booklet then try to decypher a 5 page addendum with lots of amendments and conditions etc. I think they are etting a bit tricky. They never send a proper policy just scraps of poor inkjet print-outs. Makes me wonder if they don't actually apply for your cover with the insureance underwriters unless you need to claim .

Just done my S with A Plan this year. 298 with full protected NCB, 2 of us to drive. This is a "normal" policy so still accrues NCB and no mileage limit.

Am with Dico on this. I have policy with Adrian Flux, 5k mileage a year, fully comp, garaged, 0 years no claims bonus, agreed valuation of £5000, found them very good to deal with, right down to letting me of with my gemini alarm not being cat 1, so no complaints. They were bit fussy on photos to be sent in for agreed valuation but they have good phone staff (who speak english with neutral accent - you know what I mean), so recommend them. Previous I had my 944 turbo and Clio 16v (daily runner) on Admiral multicar, £1077 fully comp for 944 and £188 third party on Clio, so huge saving for me as I am now paying less then £400 a year for both cars, which is great.

Ah, there lies my problem. I have a 12 year old Sigma alarm fitted to mine which cost the previous owner £350, but it doesn't meet the Thatcham 1 requirements (car on driveway). So I am currently getting quotes of around £350 to replace a perfectly good alarm system []. I may give em a ring and try and save myself a few dollars.

They have been superb with me so far, and have shown true enthusiasm.

I got a very poor selection from confused paul. I do hope you don't use any of these yourself ? complete waste of time for high performance classic cars I'm afraid. God knows what spam I'm going to accumalte after filling in all their stupid questions about marital status and how may children etc etc I haveGrrr

That's the problem - take two cars and two people with even slightly different circumstances and you will get dramatically different quotes from each company.

My policy dropped by quite a lot when I hit 40, but only by changing company. Why would one insurer consider this birthday a significant factor but the existing one who knew me would not? Why does one company want the car garaged with a Thatcham 1, but another insurer is happy with the car on the drive with it's original alarm? Why did I get a better deal this year than last, when nothing has changed other than me hitting 41? Why do some discount for Club membership and others not?

There's no shortcut to finding the best policy for yourself other than very tedious legwork. I'd prefer to do it over the phone rather than t'internet as you can find out why the different companies are giving different replies and explain the problem areas such as alarms or modifications with a human being.

Just for comparison I pay £200 for 5000 miles. Suburban London postcode, not garaged, old alarm and relatively young main driver. [;)] Mine is also a whisker cheaper because SWMBO is on the policy as a named driver, no-one could explain this to me! They take my full NCB on the van and Subaru into account, no speeding points for either of us. Touch wood.

I'm with http://www.footmanjames.co.uk/ £190 fully comp, not sure if told them its garaged or not tbh, 4500m limit, no alarm/immob 0yrs NCB but I live in rural Lincs. Give them a call and don't be afraid to haggle a bit.
My Spitfire is with them as well and thats £124 a year [:D]
