Check car in Ballymena

Hello,

longtime lurker from The Netherlands here, having acknowledged that this is indeed a very good forum on 944s..

I'm looking for my first 944, and found a LHD one advertised in Ballymena. It's at lmcmotors.co.uk. From the pics it looks nice enough, it's a 82 with the Pasha interior. However, before I start looking at Ryanair flights out there, I was hoping that someone here was able and willing to take a look, and see if the effort is worth it. Pricewise it's an interesting proposition compared to prices here.

Any and all comment welcome!
Thanks, Hans

[FONT=arial"]Hi Mervyn,

if you could that would be great. AFAIK the car is still for sale, apparently there's a small market for LHD cars.. I'd want to drive it to Holland, so it'd need to be in at least driveable shape.
Thanks again and I'd love to hear from you.
Regards,
Hans

hi , i checked the website and the car is still up for sale , they mention the car has no mot (goverment safety check) , i will look at it next week, but it would need to have a mot to enable you to drive it home , if you chose to buy it , cheers

[FONT=arial"]Hi, yes, I'm aware of the MOT requirement for the drive home.. That would have to be negociable. No other way of getting it here I guess. Do you think that this will be a showstopper? Thanks, Hans[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

hi , checked the 944 for you today , the owner mentioned that he had contact from you and that someone else had checked the car , he was very straight talking and direct , the car was quite a suprise not what i was expecting at all , it was parked outside on a car lot and looked like it was outside for a while , the body looks in very good condition , no rot good sills , nice and straight , the paint needs cleaned but again looks very good and better than most , the interior has very good seats with no tears and is in good overall shape , the carpets are good, and for a car that is outside were dry with no signs of damp , it was not possible to drive the car , but it started first time with good oil pressure no rattles and no smoke , the owner said that there was a brake problem with the car standing and i dont think it would be possible to drive it to holland, but the owner could get it transported to a dock of your choice at a resonable cost if you chose to buy the car, cheers mervyn classic garage

[FONT=arial"]Hi, thank you so much for taking the time to check the car. I did talk to the seller, he mentioned possible delivery to Calais. Is driving it totally out of the question or would the brakes get better with use, using caution for overheating them of course? Paul Bacon was also kind enough to check, he did drive it and mentioned sticky brakes while they were getting warm. Apart from that he was also very positive about the car. As there is no service history I'd have to get the cambelt and waterpump changed right away, or did you get the impression that wouldn't be necessary?
Now I'm psyched.[:)]
Again, thanks so much for taking the time, I really appreciate it. I'll keep you posted!
Kind regards,
Hans

hi , no problem i was in the area , i think the car is a very good project and worth the effort to restore , everthing was in much better shape than i had thought it would be , but i don,t think it would be possible to make a journey to holland in it at the moment , cheers mervyn

[FONT=arial"]Showing ignorance here, but would this be a big job and could anybody do this locally, before transporting it to Calais I mean, seeing as it has to be done anyway?
Cheers, Hans

hi , surely the simple thing to do , it to get the owner to mot the car , that way you can drive it and the problem with brakes will be sorted as well , cheers mervyn

[FONT=arial"]Well. it seems that contrary to his comments on the phone he has MOT'd the car, but also increased his asking price by GBP 1000... Making it - apart from the logistical difficulties - economically not viable to go ahead. I'm now looking at cars in Holland and germany.. Thanks again for your effort, Mervyn![FONT=verdana, geneva"]
