Check engine

[] Just had the above light up on the instrument panel, and OBC reads "Check engine drive to Garage"

Any ideas what this could be?

Could be any one of a dozen things, but most likely a sensor (MAF, O2, etc). You really need to get a diagnostic check. If you are anywhere near me in Maidenhead, I could help with that, otherwise it's a trip to the OPC or your independent.

Thanks for the offer. I'm in Uckfield East Sussex...normally go to Northways, but in this instance, may get mid-sussex OPC to have look.

Nice to know it's not serious though

Booked into OPC..Diagnostic check showed misfire on cylinder 1...They changed sparkplugs and I'm picking it up today. I'm surprised spark plugs aren't changed on major service which was done 1k miles ago, at another OPC. I'm also surprised that OPC's arent linked into a central database so that they can identify what work has already been done.

Will keep you posted if it re-appears

The fault has re-appeared...obviously not the spark plugs.. Back in the garage tomorrow

I guess it's the O2 sensor then

If it's a misfire, it could be a coil pack. The insulation has a habit of breaking down. Could also be fuel pump pressure, a varicam solenoid, an air leak, etc. There's about ten pages of troubleshooting a misfire in the diagnostic manual - good luck!

Thanks Richard..Am I right in assuming that if the light is still lit, a full diagnosis is possible (when I took it in last time, the fault cleared, but remained on the memory)

Derek - once the light has come on, it will store a fault code in the DME memory. The fault register will continue to store the fault, and the number of occurrences if it is intermittent, until the fault memory is cleared.

Thanks all...OPC called me today to say that it's possibly a tappet problem, and the engine needs to come out to inspect/rectify. Sounds expensive, so I'm taking the car back to the garage I purchased it from. Failing that, it's off to Northways..Will keep you posted

Well..it wasn't the coil or the plugs. Fault clears after a few days then re-appears (but only in the mornings, after I haven't used it for a few days). Becoming a real pain to diagnose; £300 later still has the fault

Any other thoughts please>

Do you know what the fault codes are? Without them you are shooting in the dark. The 'Check Engine' light will come up with any emissions-related fault. It could be a sensor, cat, air leak, ignition problem, etc. The list is a long one, but the fault code will point you in the right direction. However, it is difficult to comprehend how an OPC can't seem to diagnose the problem

I had the exactly the same fault on my boxster 2 years ago and it was the engine management !computer!! OPC replace it for £900- 1200
