Check those rear tyres!!

Normally my 997 C2 would not be going into the OPC for at least 6 months when the next service is due. However I booked it in to have some niggly faults done under warranty which included a faulty temperature sensor, fuel filler cap not staying open, boot release button in car not working etc

I am glad I did as once they got the car up on the lift they saw that the inner rim of the rear nearside tyre was worn down to the metal even though the rest of the tyre (the bit I could see) was fine.

From now on I think I will have a good look under the car at the inside of the tyres from time to time rather than relying on a visual inspection from the outside and a quick feel of the tyre wear bars!

Sounds like you have suspension geometry alignment issues!

I was wondering that although it was done when I had the new tyres fitted approx 15,000 miles ago - is it something that needs looking at on a regular basis?

I guess the next obvious question is "done by whom?" And indeed, with the state of our roads and depending on how many potholes you have explored in that 15k miles, a further geo check may be just what's needed![;)]
 
Mine was with CG last week...
Its now once again in rude health [:D]

Chris mention and spotted the rears were wearing spot on... the last set did too- almost wearing flat...[8D]
By nature the wide tyres make the car sit on the inside edges- the other option pointed out to me once was I wasn't driving the car hard enough (you need to understand the Geo for that to be understood[;)] )

we had a 111 point check with opc for porsche club day one of our guys had the same problem near side rear worn down to metal-opc changed rear tyre £400 which included ckub discount[:mad:]
 
You don't mention the make of tyre which suffered unseen damage for so long, and roughly how many miles have the rear tyres covered might
through some light on the matter.

I do say that I had done 15000 miles on them. They are Continental conti-sport (which were fitted to the car when I bought it)

Norwich OPC did the Geo - at the same time they did a main seal repair on the engine which Cambridge had to do again 3 months later!!
 
I start watching the rears closely after about 7k miles! If you're within striking distance of Centergravity it might be a good idea to get Chris to set it up properly. At less than £300 (about one rear tyre's worth then!) it will save you that in tyres in the long run and the car will handle better into the bargain. Win, win, as they say![;)]

Hi Gary. Just checked my invoices and the rears that I have now changed had done exactly 15226 miles. I must be giving them too much respect or do I have that Jenson Button "easy on the tyres" touch. I got 80,000 miles out of the rear tyres on our Mercedes A class (and a respectable 70,000 out of the fronts).

Given the issues above I will check the inside rims at around 9000 miles this time!

You must try harder [:D] years ago my 993 had Yokohamas with a big wing on the back pushing the arse down. Result new tyres at around 3000 miles used to joke when on a trip to France had to stop for tyre change[:(]
 
I am most envious of that sort of mileage, I did manage 12 and a bit the once but the car felt a little odd in the handling.... which I think was down to the same issues seen here [;)]- canvas!!!

Just got 15 880 miles out of our ps 2 on the rears,fronts still going strong,must say though done something to the geo in france
It took protyre three times to set it up due to one of the rear castor adjustment bolts rounded off.New bolts fitted both sides
and finally car is back as should, still trying to keep up with the TURBO'S

Had the same issue on my GT3, tyres looked OK but the inner edge was through to the canvas and I raised a thread on it at the time as I was shocked at the state of them.

It's all to do with the negative camber and it's a common issue on the GT3 and Turbo. I looked at a mates GT3 and his tyres were in the same condition.

I'd done 11,000 miles by the way.
