Just need to know how I check the gearbox oil level can't seem to find any topics on it, I can see a drain plug but don't want to undo this really without knowing how I can fill it, what Allen key/ spanner size do I need, got a loud clicking noise from the rear which comes and goes thought it might be a cv joint but suspect gearbox bearings? Also I have a 944s could I fit a gearbox from an 8v? S2? Thanks for any advice, might have to take the car to crispin manners in Devon I've heard he's quite knowledgable

Lance, You need a 17mm hex (allen) fitting on a breaker bar. The fill and drain plugs are both on the left side behind the exhaust heat shield. Level should sit just below the fill plug. The fill plug is often harder to get out... as you've already spotted it's an easy mistake to take the drain plug out, then realise the fill plug won't come out!
Lance, no, unless your car has after market shielding to the transaxle you don't have to do anything.
As said above there are 2 openings on the transaxle, the drain plug and the fill plug.
To test the level just do as follows:
Remove the FILL PLUG - this is the one physically higher (from the ground) to the drain plug. Whip it out and have some appropriate oil to hand. Very gently squirt some in. When it starts to dribble out of the FILL PLUG you have the right level.
To change the oil entirely you whip out the FILL PLUG first, then the drain plug. Let it all flow out, replace the drain plug, fill up so it weeps out of the fill plug hole, refit the fill plug.
Easy peasy.

Then ragged the nuts off it for 15,000 miles and forgot all about it. Am going to do the last 3 rallies of the year as is and then drop the oil again and see how it looks. Hopefully fine, if not I'll be banging on a LSD in the spring.

To go back to that comment in the first posting - lots of things can cause this type of knock / rattle at the back end and there are many posts in here on the subject. I had it when I first got my 944 and that was a handbrake shoe problem.got a loud clicking noise from the rear which comes and goes
Re oil change, while my gearbox has always been silent (well, not audible over the "sporty" exhaust note) it was becoming rather notchy, and an oil change cured that.
I did mine a few weeks ago, following the clarks instructions. It's a pretty easy job to do, but as stated previously, you do need a 17mm hex socket for the plugs and a suitable torque wrench to tighten them back to 24nm. I hoped it would sort out the transmission whine, but it's just dulled it slightly. I haven't tried the additive yet, has that actually worked for anyone?
I changed mine with Castrol as well and seems to have the same effect as you !(mine had swepco in it before the change )

I also changed mine with Castrol and it's now noticeably quieter. The old oil didn't look that bad, but I didn't check the level before draining.
