Checking Oil Level..

Silly question,am finding it difficult to read oil level on dipstick!!!!!!Also does it make any difference if oil is added to cold or hot engine??Any advise gratefully received..
 
You'll get chapter and verse on this topic!

Usual way is to get the engine fully warmed up - 20 minutes or so of driving - so that the temperature gauge reads at about 1/4. Leave the car on a flat surface with the engine running and give it a minute or so for the oil level to settle. The oil level gauge should read somewhere around the 1/2 - 3/4 mark (mines usually a little under) and the dipstick should show a reading. The dipstick is a pain and you need to make sure it's fully inserted to get anything to show.

Oil is added slowly with the engine running and fully warmed up, as above. Do a little at a time and keep an eye on the gauge as you don't want to overfill!

and watch those rags used for wiping excess oil don't get dragged in the fan which will be running full pelt ;-)

I've got used to doing this after a run rather than my usual practice with other cars which would have been to check on a cold engine before a run.

I've even bought a nice 1 litre filling bottle from Halfords which has a nice long neck and makes it so much easier for the regular topups these cars need.

On advantage of the engine being at the back is you can see the gauge though the rear window whilst filling lol
 
Many thanks for the replies it is great to have it confirmed that the 993 is not exactly straight forward to check the oil!!! Was almost too embarrassed ask the question glad that Idid!!!!Again many thanks.

Really? Mine must be good, then, as it very rarely needs any oil in between yearly services, at 148k mileage, too. Always check regularly on the stick.

Hi Paul, mine is variable. Did not use a drop on about 1700 miles from Scotland to Leipzig and Stuttgart and back. Then a couple of fairly short journeys (50 miles each) and half a litre was needed. It really depends on how the piston rings lay while the engine is cooling I think.
