Child Seats

I was wondering if anyone out there is able to help. I am considering buying a 968 as a weekend/occasional car. I was wondering what the rear seats are like in each type (Coupe/Sport) and whether it is possible to fit a child seat into them. Having this level of practicality would be a real help convincing she-who-must-be-obeyed.

I have 2 kids, aged 3 and 1, and was wondering if they could be fitted into the back of the car, or whether Porsche did a child seat for the 968. The 3-year-old is big enough just to have a booster cushion in the back of the family motor.

Also, can you fit a push chair into the boot?

Any help appreciated.

HI, I HAVE A 968 SPORT AND TWO CHILDREN WHO I TAKE EVERYWHERE INCLUDING THE SCHOOL RUN. THEY ARE 11 AND 8 AND I HAVE NO PROBLEM. OBVIOUSLY IF THE DRIVER IS REALLY TALL THERE WILL BE LESS LEG ROOM FOR THE CHILD BEHIND BUT I FIND IT REALLY ISN'T A PROBLEM, IN FACT THE REAR SEATS IN THE 968 ARE VERY SUPPORTIVE ( A BIT LIKE BUCKET SEATS)

AS FAR AS PUSHCHAIRS GO.......I AM A BIT PAST THAT STAGE, BUT IF MY HUSBAND CAN KET HIS GOLF CLUBS IN I CANT SEE THAT BEING A PROBLEM EITHER.

HOPE THAT HELPS, SO MY ADVICE....GO GET ONE, I LOVE MINE TO BITS !!!

There is very good discussion on child seats for the 968 here ...

Personally I don't have kids, but I have transported a number of my friends kids, up to teenagers, in the back and they all seem to love it. My coupe has inertia reel belts fitted as standard in the rear. As far as I know there will be rear seat belts in all coupes, absolutely not in Club Sports, and I'm not sure about Sports or Cabs.

PS My car is somewhat reluctantly for sale, details on my website at www.arthurlea.com

MrHeed,

I recently purchased a 968 and have a 1 year old daughter.

A push chair will fit quite comfortably in the back. Porsche did make a seat for the 968 but this is long since discontinued. As discussed in the thread linked by John above, I purchased one second hand but you obviously must be careful.

I have a 1.5 and a 3 yr old and a '93 968 Coupe. Contrary to what I've read, on the above link, the Porsche Prince seat DOES fit the 968 and costs ca £90. I know, I have two. Leg room for the young ones is tight though, be warned, but so far (last 4 months, I have had no complaints from the juniors). The boot is hugely capacious, I can easily fit a single stroller + a double stroller at the same time (folded, of course!).

I was told by a vendor (Porscheshop) of the Porsche Prince seat that it was not suitable for a 968. That said the prince does look very similar (in a photograph) to a 'period' Porsche child seat (approved for the 968).

Hi John,
Just very mmuch sucked in to work and child minding, neither of which you will be familiar with! I do lurk around the sites occasionally though. Sorry to hear your 968 is on the market. I just love mine. I had Hartech go through it as we said and it's been fantastic. Just put a CD changer in it and continue to use it daily for my 9 mile commute. Hopefully the winter salt won't bring too many tears. Hardly used my 911 since getting the 968. You're right, the 968 is incredibly fast and I'm pleased I went with a coupe and not a Sport, for my application.
Cheers,
Dave

Dave,

I'm delighted to hear that the car has been a good 'un, and that you are enjoying it so much. I only use mine every weekend or so, and sometimes I come back thinking it's old fashioned, bumpy and thirsty, and determined I should sell it, then the next time I'll have a blindingly good run in it, and fall in love all over again. Funny, this is a pattern that I developed latterly with my Harley, and only eventually sold it because someone talked me into selling it. I guess you can gather that my plan to sell my 968 is only luke warm!

Hope we meet up again soon.

Cheers

John H

PS Work and child minding? .. nope rings no bells [&:], you'd have to explain [:D]

I too will soon need a child seat in my 968 Sport. However the car has bucket seats (CS specification I think).

Does anyone have experience of using a rear child seat with these seats in the front or is it possible to change the passenger seat, as access is difficult to the rear seats (which are standard and have seat belts).

Do any standard child seats fit the car or do I need to go to Porsche?

Any help gratefully recieved.

Richard

If you have Club Sport bucket seats, they are fixed and don't tilt, which means you should not really use the rear seats. This is why Porsche deleted the rear seats from the CS.

You should be able to pick up a passenger seat though, and there will be no shortage of folk who would buy your CS seat. Try the forum at http://www.porsche968uk.co.uk/phpbb/index.php as there has been some recent discuccion on this very point.

I have used the original porsche seat which comes in three parts and retains the child using the original lap belt and it is currently for sale along with a very nice 968 Sport if you are interested ...

regards

Chris, whilst I don't doubt you for a second, just to note, PorscheShop have told me twice, with 2 months in between that the Prince seat will definitly fit in a 968, and to be more specific, a cabriolet too!

Denis,

I can only assume I spoke with someone different. I called as a prospective purchaser so their loss !

Do you have any photos of the seat in situ as I would be interested to see how it looks.

Regards,
Chris.
