Chip Upgrade

How easy is it to change the chip on the 3.2? Anything i should watch out for when doing it as i am a bit scared of damaging the old chip and also the new one.

Really easy to replace and will take you under 30 min's - do you have any instructions with your chip? and more importantly what kind of chip is it

Cheers guys. It is a Weismaster chip designed for the 3.2. It is designed to be used with a cat by-pass pipe and stainless back box. Any thoughts?

Do you mean Weltmeister? If so, these are generic chips from the USA.

The fact that it is designed to be used with a cat bypass suggests to me that it is designed for the US spec engine originally with a cat and lower compression rather than a high compression euro engine, but who knows. You have no idea when the chip was made, whether it is pushing the ignition timing past safe levels, etc. The only safe route and guaranteed route is to get the car dynoed, get a chip burned based on the AFRs and get it retested to see the change. Even that assumes all the other variables are the same or compensated for. Unfortunately, 3.2s seem to vary too much for confidence to be placed in an off the shelf chip IMHO. If you do buy off the shelf then at least SW has lots of experience, seems to produce a safe chip and certainly offers very good customer service.

Thanks for the advice Richard. The chip was used on a 3.2 89. My car has a cat at the moment and I have the by pass pipe ready to go on with a stainless steel back box. It is a weltmeister chip. Is it worth getting the chip fitted and the car dyno tested to check is safe.
Poss thinking that it may be worth paying the extra for a Mr Wong chip and the peace of mind it won't blow my engine up!!!

If you have both the original and the Weltmeister chip, then do two dyno runs and see what they each produce. If you are still unhappy, send SW the AFR plots and he will do a custom chip - that's what I would do. Yes, the dyno will give you a better idea if the chip is safe, in terms of AFRs and the operator if experienced may be more likely to hear detonation with his trained ear if the timing has been pushed too far.
