Chipped Alloy!

Hi.

I’ve just had new rear tyres fitted to my GTS 4.0 and, on arriving home, noticed that the satin black finish is chipped on the perimeter of one wheel - really annoying.

The tyre fitter has offered to have the wheel resprayed, but I’m not too sure.

Is there some kind of touch up pen that would help blend it in and take my eye off it?

I hate having anyone near my car for this very reason!

I have used a black sharpie to buy time while waiting for my wheel insurance to arrange the repair. There may be a better option but it worked for me.

Thanks.

I’m chewing the fat about this - the wheel is as new, with the exception of a small mark on the perimeter surface - is a full respray overkill?

Sorry should have expanded on my reply. Having kerbed mine the insurer arranged a smart repair which (at least to my untrained eye) did the job and only which took about an hour. If the damage had just been a chip I would probably have touched it up and left it. It is bound to get chipped through use so I tend to be philosophical and just touch it up.

I’m leaning towards that Tim , most folk would not even spot what I’m talking about!

Do I need a particular touch up pen, or just anything black?

In my case it was an ordinary black felt tip. If you give it a go to should be able to tell. I have not been able to find a "proper" satin black touch up.

Good luck with the felt tip pen! If it works then that's a great tip.

Sadly, one of my polished alloy wheels was damaged during a service at an OPC. I wouldn't accept repair and they replaced it with a new one.

The reason being is that if they had repaired it and it was skimmed, then if I damaged it in the future there would be less for me to get skimmed.

I’ve taken the eye off the mark with a felt-tip pen, that will help for now - thanks for the tip!

I’m still toying with the idea of letting the tyre place repair it, but I’m not sure I’d trust them, so I probably won’t bother.

I managed to severely scuff the rim on one of my rear wheels on my 718 in 2 places - about 4 inches in total. It was suggested to me that a smart repair might be the way to go. I was sceptical but Chipsaway did a fantastic job in situ for £120 despite the inclement weather. Repair was invisible and has lasted. But the quality of the job depends on the experience of the technician so I suggest you ask about this aspect if you decide to go down this route.
