Chipped ECU

I have an early dash 944 Lux - with the ECU that can't be chipped. Does anyone know if it's possible to replace the ECU with one from a later 2.5 model that can be chipped. I'm looking for some performance improvement - any advice in this area would be appreciated.

Thanks

I didn't know there was such a thing.

I am only guessing but would assume the later ECU couldn't just be plugged into the earlier loom.

The Lux engine is very good in standard tune and is difficult to extract any additional power.

Changes such as chip and MAF upgrades have had variable reviews and tend to be expensive for modest or no gain.

Get a throttle response cam if you haven't already. They don't increase power (or insurance) but do make the car seem more sprightly.

A cone air filter give an awesome induction roar. Again little or no real performance advantage, but makes it sound like you are going quicker.

The only real way to improve the performance of a Lux is to shed everything that doesn't contribute to making the car go forward. Failing that, flog it and get a Turbo it will probably cost you less than the increase in your insurance premium for a modified car.

I agree with john, theres not much you can do to an early 944 to make it any quicker (ive tried) other than loosing some weight (the car that is not you !!).. Im pretty sure the ecu from the later car doent fit the early loom as well.

Am I wrong when a little part of my brain remembers that you could solder a chip into the old ECU?

PLEASE don't try this until it's been confirmed by someone else...[&:]

I'm not so sure it is that simple. I think that the older ECU's have a completely different architecture to the later ones so it's not a simple case of replacing the chips.
