Chips and pipes

More advice please!

Two things:

1. In my ownership docs there's a receipt for a Superchip. I think it's still in the ECU - the car doesn't like traffic or being on a light throttle. It wants to tear around like an arse all the time. If I don't/can't, a whiff of fuel wafts over me, particularly on the overrun (no smell from the tank before you ask, and no sign of probs with the fuel lines). I reckon (with all my limited knowledge of these things) that the chip is causing some drastic over-fuelling. So I'd like to get rid of this chip and go back to stock, then maybe see about something more interesting later on when I've proved there isn't anything else causing the problem. Does anyone have a working stock S2 chip they would consider letting me have for a reasonable sum please? What's the going rate? Is it a DIY fit, by the way?

2. The previous owner of my car was very proud of the bespoke stainless exhaust sytsem he had fabricated by proper men who bend pipes. However, it's not to my taste (too loud for me), and I can't live with it, so I'd like to see if there's a decent stock unit hanging around somewhere for reasonable money. I'd also be willing to part-ex the one on my car if anyone is interested. It's in excellent condition with low miles. Any offers?

Cheers, Craig

It's an easy DIY job (sorry I don't have one though [:D] )

Have you considered getting an exhaust place to replace / add a silencer in the current system? If you find one that does Powerflow systems, they carry loads of bits to custom build exhausts.

I think I'll run up to our local indie and see if he can suggest a silencer to add to the system. I think there's only the rear box in place. It's quite a large bore job and looks nice, just a bit Vauxhall Nova if you know what I mean. I'm not aware of a local pipe man who could do the job. Anyone know an exhaust specialist in the Reading area?

Good to hear the chip change is easy. Needs to be with my ham fists...

I have a standard chip (somewhere...) it's yours if you want it, I'll have a dig around!

Brilliant! Thanks for the offer. Let me know how the search goes. I'm sure there's beer, wine, scotch or whatever in it for you!

Cheers, Craig

Another option is ÂŁ100 for a ProMax chip. I had a Blitz Chip (from which AFAIK the Promax map was developed) and I felt it worth it. Changing them over isn't hard, but separating the 2 PCBs isn't obvious 'til you spot the clips inside the big connector.

I also picked up a 2nd hand Janspeed/ESS exhaust. It was painfully loud, which didn't tie in with descriptions from other owners.

Took it to a local-ish stainless exhaust fabricator (who was making a set of headers for Colin McRae's ÂŁ100k mk2 Escort when I arrived.... lovely work and lovely car) who opened up the silencer to find all the soundproofing wadding insides was blown out or shot. He proposed this occurs if the exhaust runs very hot / very rich or both. Which sounds a bit like your description....

He refilled it with comptetion-grade "long strand" wadding and neatly welded it bacl closed with ridiculous ease. Sounded great thereafter.....

edit: and relieved me of only ÂŁ50.

I had thought about the Promax chip, but my priority at the moment is a back to basics approach to get it all working properly. Then I think I might invest in some toys!

Good tip on the back box. I'll do a search for a local firm that knows about these things.

Thanks, Craig

Let me know if you do decide to get rid of the exhaust. As the resident Nova (well 924s)man on the 944 board, it could well suit my bizarre tastes: my standard S2 exhaust is far too quiet, allowing too much thinking whilst I'm driving...

How "LOUD" is loud btw? If you do deciide to sell, I'd like to measure it, in case it would get banned from all trackdays forthwith

It's LOUD. Get's louder the longer you drive. By the end of a journey I've had enough. I don't think it'll be very trackday friendly, but if you have the kit you're more than welcome to measure it. It's particularly noisy on hte overrun when it booms away at a really intrusive pitch. It's quite nice under acceleration - for a while - then it just GETS ON MY NERVES!

Craig,

If that superchip is looking for a home after you remove it, I'd be happy to supply beer/scotch/whatever in return for it ...

Oli.

Oli - I've not heard anyone making positive noises about the Superchips remap in the S2 (eg Craig himself). I believe Fen swapped out a Superchip for a Blitz chip on one of his S2's with very positive results.

Mik,

Oh. OK. Thanks for the warning.

Craig ... maybe I'll (politely) retract my earlier offer. Sorry to have troubled you.

Oli.

Superb - no big hurry really. I could always pop over to you (good excuse for a little drive) to pick it up.

Thanks, Craig

Mik - you've just cost me beer/scotch/whatever. Ta very much [;)]

I've saved you the sleepless nights knowing you sold a substandard (allegedly) product to a fellow forum user. You owe me a beer [:D] [;)] []

Scotty - I did wonder if they are interchangeable but no-one has suggested it so far. If so, job done. Mind you, it's probably burdened with a cat isn't it?

You'd (and anyone else interested) be very welcome at the Tipec meet - we're at The Novello on the A4 just a few hundred yards further along towards Maidenhead from the Bird in Hand. We meet from 7.30pm on the first Tuesday of the month, which will be the 7th in July.

Well that's another view I suppose. Fair enough. When are you coming to collect?[:)]
