Hi. Has anyone used these Chips Away boys?

If so would anyone care to share their experiences please.

Cheers

I think it can vary between areas as the result is heavily influenced by the skill of the operator.
Whereabouts are you?

Likewise- there's a guy I use who's excellent - got him to do a full bonnet respray, but only because I had used him before for smaller jobs. Generally their reputation is variable to say the least.

Our local agent, did a really good job on my wife's Zaffira before wesold it. - Scratches & small dents very well dealt with. I wanted him to do some scatches on mine, but he said it was hard to get good results with metalic silver.

great as long as they don't need to use a welder. i had a car they fried all the wiring in. couldn't prove it though so had to swallow the 1,600 repair bill. scratches yes, major work no.

I had them do a job on my boxster wing mirror that got bashed in a car park. he resprayed the mirror well enough and a perfect match, however when i cleaned the car afterwards he had got overspary on the car where he had not covered the car. I made them come back and polish all the car and an put the car right, they did a good job in the end, but its hassle you don't need. My tip, tell them to cover the whole car (like surgery) and leave the appendage only visible. That way you have no overspray worries.

my experience nr luton was good.though i have since used a local independent guy who i think is better .friends elsewhere report some good some not so for chipsaway

Reading / Berkshire ChipsAway did a 3 inch wall multi scratch to metal on my wing arch on the old Audi ... could not see it when finished .. as folks say its not chipsaway you need to feel comfortable in its the individual guys as its a francise operation

Wanted them to do a nasty shopping trolley scratch on my dark blue Vauxhall Tigra, but they guy wouldn't touch it. Said it would require the entire section to be sprayed and that their process couldn't do it. Wouldn't even do all the other minor scratches elsewhere, like on both wing mirrors. Talked himself out of a job.

I'm in Blackburn.

My experience has not been good. And he didn't even get near my car!

The guy couldn't make his mind up when to come and have a look at the car. Then when he did decide to come, couldn't follow simple (and I really mean simple) directions. Then when I phoned him to see where he had disappeared to, he didn't answer his phone! Unbelievable. I do hope he is ok though 'cos I haven't heard from him since!!

Thanks for all your responses anyway.

Chips Away did my BMW. A bit of faffing around getting the guy to turn up when planned but the job was fine.

Don't expect miracles - they are touching up scratches mostly so if you want invisible, get a proper body shop to do it. If you want passable and cheaper (ideal for small scratches or stone chips when you don't want a full respray) its probably worth it.

Quite a few bad experiences from Chipsaway franchises it seems [8|]

I've used a guy called Manny several times (N.London). He has always done a very good job at exceptionally good rates. He is honest about what he can and can't do, spends hours on the job and always get's it done right. I even had him fix a mess an OPC approved bodyshop made on my Boxster several years ago.

He told me a franchise is available after a minimum of training. However, some franchisees go on further courses to top up their knowledge. You should ask a franchisee if they do this. This may help in determining if they are dedicated to their job or not.

But I believe they are immensely expensive - read this on another car forum.

IIRC the franchise is around £15-20k not so much when you consider you have exclusive rights to an entire area, and if you do a good job, will be booked up for months.

An example of his pirces - £80 to repair a 2 inch scratch on my rear bumper. £30 to repair a lightly curbed alloy. Very reasonable.
