Chipsaway or SMART repair

Hi,

I've been searching for a Chips Away (or similar) recommendation near my area (Windsor/M4 corridor) - as I have a fair few chips and a couple few minor scratches/scuffs picked up over the weekend that I'd like repaired.

Can anyone help? I don't mind travelling for the right job...

Thanks in advance,

Justin

Shame you aren't in the east mids as I know someone who does a much better job than Chips away will ever do and usually for less. But if you fancy a trip to Derby then I can highly recommend them. E mail me if interested

I have a great guy in Selsdon - he might be prepared to travel out to you. His name is Ralph and his mobile is 07788 132748. He has done great work on my 964 (viola metallic) and my 993 (polar silver) and clearly knows his stuff.

Hi all,

Many thanks for the prompt replies! Selsdon is probably easiest for me, will give him a call.

Cheers

Justin

I'd be very interested to know how you get on with this- I've always been a bit sceptical about 'smart' chip/scratch repairs, but it would be great if it worked.

I have tried before to get a chips man but after several promises and no turn up have decided, as there is no one in my immediate area,(SW Scotland) to have a go my self.[:(]
Have ordered paint etc and will practice on the Volvo first[]

Chipsaway is a bit of a misnomer as they really do the scratches and scuffs; stone chips are usually a full panel spray job. If West London is any good then I can recommend the local chipsaway guy here.

Thanks for all the replies, yes west london also works well for me, so I'd really appreciate their contact details too

I found the same as THX911 with Chips Away. When I told them I had a Met Black 911 that had chips on the front and bonnet that resembled the constellation Orion they wern't a bit interested.

It will be a full front respray soon - How much does an application of amourfend cost and is it effective someone?

I have seen Armourfend on a Black 911. Looked ok but you can tell its on. I guess its a trade off between protecting your paintwork and the car not looking quite as good due to the armourfend. It did look worth considering i thought. Certainly if you are an everyday driver. You could peel it off come selling time to reveal an alomst perfect front end !

I've seen cars with it, and there are a few issues
- you can certainly spot it, esp on a darker car.
- it does not prevent stonechips, merely acts as a sacrificial barrier. The chips on the film look naffer than chips in paint IMO, but I suppose the film can be replaced easily.
- it is not cheap, didn't seem far removed in cost compared to a PU/bonnet respray but with the film you will keep the originality of the paint.

My car already has some chips so it seems hardly worth doing now. However, I agree that if its your daily driver then its worth doing if the paint's mint to start with.

I used chipsaway in Reading for my previous car and I was not overly impressed by the finish. On first inspection it was great but after a few days it started to go 'off' a little and the lacquer appeared to dull somewhat. Can get polished out but reappears a few weeks later...

I would only use them now for tiny damage....
