Chipwizardry

Just booked into see Wayne on 26 August for some wizardry.

Scary to find out what the RS is pushing out. My old Carrera 2 (272bhp) always felt strong and the RS feels similar. I always think 10% power difference is hard to detect unless the stopwatch is out.

My car is standard save for 100 cell cats and a K and N filter.

My fear is this cam timing issue that I read can afflict RS engines resulting in a loss of power and I presume this visit to Wayne will reveal that issue!

I'll report back.

Kind regards

U refer no doubt to slipping timing chains ..surely there cant be many /any left that have nt been pegged? Wayne knows what hes doing alright but may i suggest without going for 'hotter' cams, Titanium valve spring retainers or even solid lifters a 10% lift on standard IRO 304 BHP, IS TEMPTING FATE AND CAN LEAD TO ALL SORTS OF UNECCEASSRY STRESSES.........................are u sure its worth it for say 30 bhp , get him to test what it reads and then map to standard , for longevity and hours of reliable pleasure ..................only my 2 penneth.

I agree; my reason for the visit is really to get it dyo'd to see where things are at, make sure the fuelling etc is right after the cats and within reason have it set up to be in rude health. My reference to 10% was the difference between my old Carrera and the RS not the gain i want out of Wayne.

I have had a BMW M5 set up before this way after fitting a supersprint exhaust and the end result got little more power but was much more pleasant in its delivery in terms of smoothness etc.

I have a motorbike too and am often told that after replacing the exhaust a remap is a necessity to avoid any lean running issues and I am looking again at the RS in a similar vein.

If I exit the place knowing there is 304 bhp I will be happy as Larry and feel like £500 well spent.

I did discuss with Colin Belton the £10k billet head route, and discounted it on the basis the RS has lovely balance, and it seemed alot for 10% up on a standard 300 bhp . Whilst 996 GT3 punter may have more poke, I'll be having more fun out there too! I took it in to Colin to have the geo looked at at the same time as I had solid subframe mounts put on and it came back with the same ride height difference left to right as it went in and no response on the email when I mentioned this so i also thought better of letting him mess with the car anyway!

Once I get the remap done, I intend to get Centre of Gravity to set it up and short of a cage and 2nd pole position I feel my work is done other than when funds allow changing to solid lifters. i just don't like the whole hydraulic thing and having replaced 3 last year still have an errant tap from time to time!

kind regards

If you are content with 300 odd horse, I would keep the hydraulic lifters, much easier to live with, adjustment is a pain in the neck and wallet otherwise.....I would agree it is neccesary with higher bhp tuning, but feel it is perfectly able to cope with 300ish bhp.

I think i misread ur intentions ..............................have had a couple of these wonderful cars one came in at 34000ks and when i sold it at over a 100ks had and to this day has never had the engine touched , another a cs now for sale on well known site discussed elsewhere by Clubsport himself ............became very sensitive to just abt everything when tuned to approx 330bhp , and had everything save the hot cams .......................crackd a head , not uncommon, broke rockers and some other more unusual things , for its age including leaky varioram at one stage !
Like for like if i were lucky enough to buy one of thes again AT THOSE PRICES i think ifd take the softer one ...............................Wayne has done a more complex twin plug 993 GT2 of mine, think hes brilliant never met anyone else even a patch on him ............................hope u get it sorted just how u want ,Good luck
ps at a monkey, hes still very good value ,recently got hit for £950 for very similar work , frankly not as well done .....................

Thanks Clubsport; i have no evidence to back up my dislike, just based on the "worry about my baby" syndrome that afflicts us all. My car had a new engine before i bought it due to I understand a missed gearchange and I wonder if solid lifters do a better job at controlling things in an over rev situation than hydraulic tappets?

As ever probably an irrational fear !

FWIW solid lifters may provide IRO 1000 revs extra safety limit for wrong slotting ..............................b4 Paul says so, from 5th to 2nd, in error at Eau Rouge........................ do not believe anything will save u !!!!!!!!!!!!
A very expensive mistake and i still live in fear my wife learns how to sign in and finds out what it cost!!
In reality hell of an extreme, for what ever after need manual adjustment as stated a proper pain ..............price for relative peace of mind very hard to quantify ....................

Had my engine rebuilt earlier this yr due to a mysterious oil leak which turned out to be an oil seal between two halves of the crank, seal is unique to the 993RS I was told. Did a whole load of "while you're there" kind of jobs but over all the engine internals were in very good shape. Thought about all sorts of "upgrades" at the time including solid lifter, 9m heads, hot cam etc etc, but in the end left everything stock bar exhaust valve guides (which needed changing anyway) to tougher ones.

Had the 100cells cat and Cargraphic muffler too. Dynoed by Bob Watson as I was thinking of having it re-mapped at the same time. Found 310bhp without K&N fillter, 305 with K&N filter even before re-map. So didn't bother with the K&N filter or the re-map and left it as standard.

Intersting about K and N. When you say without I presume you mean the original filter is back in or no filter?

Did Bob give any thoughts views on the K and N?

I have as a matter of course used on for years in a sucession of cars and never actually done a before and after!

Didn't say anything about it, just a print out with K&N and normal filter. I did put the K&N back for the Monza trip and the engine did feel a bit livelier though, not sure if the moving air made any difference as the dyno was with the car static???
