Chpping the 2.5 lux

I am considering putting a chip in my car (not the potato variety). Ive looked at superchips and they rekon 10bhp more but star chips say they get the bhp upto 182.

Has anybody chipped the 2.5 non turbo angine and if so any suggestions on where to get it done or what chip to put in.

If you have a non-S (ie. a Lux) then before you play around with chips I would fit a so called " throttle cam" . Cost is about £20 and it is a round (as opposed to eliptical) shaped throttle cable cam. I found that fitting this really made a very pleasant difference, with the power being more readily available over the throttle travel. In reality there is no more power (obviously!) but the car was a lot nicer to drive.
The S and S2 already have round versions of this, so don' t need it!
10 BHP is not much - is it worth the cost?

I have read feedbak on the http://www.titanic.co.uk/944 forum that off the shelf chips for N/A 944' s do not really give much improvement. However, having your car individually remapped on a rolling road can give noticeable power improvements, smoother running and sometimes better fuel economy. Obviously it costs more but this way you get a dyno plot of before and after.

Try http://www.chipwizards.co.uk <<< highly recommended by many Turbo owners,
or http://www.auto-amd.co.uk

Other power improvements for N/A 944 include head skimming to increase compression, removal of balance shaft belts [], rebuilding and balancing to race car standard by EMC Motorsport 0121 328 2225 or simply bolting on a Supercharger from http://www.speedforceracing.com

Alternatively buy an S2 or Turbo and get the brakes/ suspension to match that power [;)]

Car & Car Conversions did an excellent spread on the 944 in October 2001 with much reference to Andrew Sweetenham.

Their conclusion was that the Lux engine was manufactured at its optimum state of tune by Porsche and there is little you can do to improve it on a budget. You can throw big money at it in reworking the internals and head, as previously noted, but the gains will be measured in single figures.

Much better to spend the money on a Turbo and get the whole package.

In tuning a Turbot, it is suggested that 450 bhp is available for about £6K which is equal to £30 per bhp uplift. Good value in anyones books.

A friend of mine had a 968 chipped and re-mapped at AMD.

He said that although it didn' t increase the power much it did improve the mid range driveability.

I would make sure all the other things like plug leads, distributor cap etc. are up to scratch first.

I remember when I put good plugs a new cap and a set of Magnecor leads on my Celica GT4 it made a hell of a difference.
