Hi Guys,
I wonder if anyone can help, just bought lovely 2005 987 Boxster, which has the factory fitted Chrono sport stop watch on the dash. However when I go to the onboard computer where the book says I will find the start stop function there is nothing displayed. Help please
Peter

Lower left hand stalk.

Push it away from you.

Should show 'Chrono' and 'Set'. Push away on Chrono. Does this help?

hi Richard,

Thanks, that is the problem, when I do that I get the Oil etc headings, but no Chrono. It is as if someone has installed the chrono clock, without the data on the on board computer. I have the sport button and that works, but nothing on the onboard computer.

Hi Peter,

Clearly there’s something amiss there. As you say, you should be seeing CHRONO on the display, and the fact that the Sport button is working means that the installation is OK. If you have PCM I think that CHRONO should be available via that?

Unfortunately I think the only way forward is to get the car on a Porsche-specific diagnostic system (PIWIS or equivalent) which is capable investigating the fault and hopefully resetting the system. With luck it’s just a case of ticking a box in the software.

Not sure if you are talking about what is displayed in the right hand dashboard screen or on the main PCM, or what version of PCM you have. I'm assuming the right hand dash display. On my 981 if I go into "Settings" on that, then "Display", then "Menu Scope", I can choose which topics get cycled through when I press the appropriate lever. I have unticked "Chrono" and "G force" because I rarely use those and it makes cycling through the ones I want to see faster. If you have the same (or similar) facility on the 987, might be worth checking to see what is ticked. It will all be in the handbook somewhere (or the PCM book, can't remember which without checking). If it isn't ticked, it isn't shown.

Brian,

FYI the 987 doesn’t have your 981’s supplementary display in the instrument console. I have Sport Chrono on my 987.2 CS but don’t have PCM, hence my comment that CHRONO access may be available through PCM?

Jeff

Jeff, thanks for reminding me what I had on my 987 without PCM! Sorry for my error but hence my "If you have the same (or similar) facility on the 987" comment. Peter doesn't say whether he has PCM or not, but in any case, it might be worth trying "return to factory settings" and see what happens (if you have that on a 987 with or without PCM!).

I would suspect the car has "forgotten" about the feature - it may need a handover reset done ( car sometimes forgets options or parts of options if it has a a very flat battery or has had the battery removed for a fair amount of time) - or it could be that the instrument cluster needs to be (re) told about that feature being present.

Has anything else "odd" started happening - like forgetting heated or memory seats, or interior lights only working if the key is in the ignition ? ( that points to a handover reset).

Either option ( handover reset, or just the instrument cluster programming) will need someone with likely a porsche PIWIS system ( I don't think durametric or similar can do the handover reset)

Whereabouts are you - there maybe someone on here with the appropriate equipment who might be able to help?

Hi Guys, many thanks for your thoughts and Ideas, the car hasn't got PCM. I have to agree with Paul, the previous owner did say that the car had had its battery disconnected for some some, so memory failure really does sound the logical answer . I will drop in on my local Genius, Chris who will doubtless sort it. Thanks you all again
Peter
