Cigarette lighter removal

Hi

My car keeps blowing fuse #9 which protects the fresh air blower, rear screen heater and cigarette lighter. I'm trying to isolate each item to identify which of the components is faulty.

The fresh air blower is quite straightforward, so next on my list is the cigarette lighter, I've unscrewed and remove the front part, but cant find out how to get access to the wires at the back. I've removed both the glove box and radio but still can't find the back of the unit.

Yet again your help would be appreciated.

Just in case anyone has to undertake this task, removal of the cigarette lighter is as follows

From inside the cockpit unscrew the outer part of the lighter and remove this along with the black plastic surround.

The rest of the lighter is located the other side of the front bulkhead and requires removal of the fresh air blower and plenum chamber to gain access via the front luggage compartment.

is it easy to do this . my lighter fell out on the way to le mans so now no sign of the wire, The fuse blows so it must be touching metal. is there any easy way to isolate the lighter and get the blower and the de-mist working. There are two wires from the fuse any chance one of these is the lighter only

I'm not an expert, but I thought the fuse protected the feed to the fresh air blower, rear screen heater and the cigarette lighter which would indicate three wires rather than two. Although it should be quite easy to disconnect them both and then reconnect one a t a time and see which wire is the culprit.

Replacement of the lighter is quite straightforward once you realise access is via the front luggage compartment and not from inside the car itself. Cost of the new lighter unit was about £52 from a OPC, although with the benefit of hindsight I suspect all you need to do is reconnect the loose centre wire and re-assemble the lighter unit which needs two people, one in the car and one working in the luggage compartment.

My unit also fell out while in France, must be the French dislike of German cars following yet another win by Audi!

Hi,

I need to fix my cigarette lighter (it has no voltage sat on the back terminal) and have read this post. I have a 1985 911 Turbo and am not too sure if this is the same as the Carrera you guys have.

From inside the car I see a small black circular plastic ring which just about covers the outer edge of the lighter barrel. This I can spin around but it doesnt have any effect on the actual lighter barrel itself.

Which part is supposd to come out from inside the car?

Also, the blower control next to the heater controls doesnt appear to be working either so I guess this could be linked.

Any help on removal of the cigarette lighter and possibly the blower switch would be helpfull.

Thanks,
Chris

I would start swapping fuses and relays around to see if you can get any power. Do not test the fuses, change them. Same for the relays.

I have a feeling the heating unit is fed from a unique relay in the engine compartment though and they cost approx. £100. Sorry I do not know more.

Hello,

I have just got in from fixing the electric seat. They were working fine a short while ago but for some reason the backrest didnt want to come forward (not good when you've already been playin' with the swtich in car and accidentally moved the backrest quite far back as in space rocket pilot arrangement ). Still it was only a dirty switch contact so that was an easy fix. Seat had to come out of car as trying to get the ball bearings etc back in the switch with seat in car is a bit tricky (not good angles).

Before I came on here I thought I'd take another quick look at the cigarette lighter from inside the car. I've sussed that too! I was spinning the circular plastic ring and wondering why nothing was happening. I then thought about trying to spin the lighter barrel and hey presto (doh!) the barrel unscrewed. It looks like there should be a pin which attaches to the back of it which typically in my case wasnt.......so I think its time to remove all the heater stuff from the luggage compartment and refit it!

Here I go again.........sat back in that cramped little luggage compartment.

Cheer guys,
Chris
