Cigarette lighter socket - location?

No, the cigarette lighter socket is in with the ashtray. I ordered the Universal Audio Interface and was disappointed. I would not have it again. You need a cable which plugs the headphone output of an iPod into the UAI - it plays through the car audio but the volume isn't very loud; I tried it once and haven't bothered again. I don't listen to music much in the car anyway, so was a nice to have for me, not an essential. You can't control tracks etc from the car audio. The volume thing is the same when I try to connect my iPod to a home audio so is an iPod issue not related to the car and may be related to the age of my iPod (brick model). I would not recommend UAI unless you have PCM and get the fully functional capability.

I've ordered the 'Universal Audio Interface' - a rather grand title for a 3.5mm aux input socket which I understand is hidden away in the central storage console (non-PCM car). Is the cigarette lighter socket also in there? Would be handy for charging the iPod.

Thanks Brian, FWIW, the volume issue on iPods affects the newer ones too, but fortunately it can be fixed with a firmware tweek. If you google ipod volume or something like that the fix may be available for yours too. Mrs telford_mike is an iPod addict - I thought it worth the £74 to keep her happy [:)]

Let me just get this straight....you are both talking about a new gen 2 car here? Surely this is a backward step, in my gen 1 car I have a power outlet in the centre armrest storage area...(non Bose). I was in the process of trading up to a Gen 2 car then cancelled my order, but the Ipod connection was on my spec list, and there was no mention of the power outlet being done away with...it actually defeats the object of the ipod step forward! You guys seem to be in the know, but doesnt the ipod connector automatically supply power to charge the ipod itself?

Hi Alan, Yes, Gen 2 on order. I think the PCM cars may have a 'proper' iPod link with charging etc, but the CDR30 cars seem to just have a 3.5mm input which will basically take any audio input from an iPod, phone etc. Reason for my original post was to inquire whether there might be a charging opportunity in the console. As you say, without it the input is a bit limited!

The Gen 2 with PCM has a great ipod connection. Sits in the central console and once plugged in charges the ipod and the whole of the operation becomes on screen on the PCM with full control, choice of music, etc. Its really very good, one ipod now stays in the car and with the Bose sound system it is really the best place to listen to music.

Please dont think I'm questioning your intelligence here, but I would double check what you have been told by the OPC again. The sales guy in my dealership was definitely selling me a hardwired ipod connection, sited in the centre consol, which would interface with the standard stereo...non pcm and dsiplay track info etc... the cost was about £74 - £84?? Not a universal connector as you mention above. If it is as you say...I would have been furious had I gone with that and got something less than he described!

I'm travelling but will take a picture when I get home at the end of the week. I thought it was going to be the fully functional gizmo even without PCM - I ordered before all the info was crystal clear on the configurator. When I looked at what got delivered it caused me to go back and look at the spec on the web - I was disappointed to find the description on the web was what I got, ie without PCM it is very basic.

Quote from the configurator: ".... in conjunction with CDR30 - the option includes an AUX interface for the connection of other external audio sources, whereby only volume can be operated over CDR30..." The cost is £74. If you have PCM you get the full monty needless to say.
